“Xinru, is what he said true?” Anger flushed Shen Zhongyi's usually pale face with a rare hint of color, and his hands instinctively clenched tightly.
“Zhongyi, things aren’t as you imagine. I... I have my reasons...”
Upon hearing her words, Shen Zhongyi felt his heart sink, and he asked with a tremor in his voice, “What reasons? Tell me!”
“I... I can’t say...”
The matter concerned the reputation of the Shen Family and his mother’s honor. Zhao Xinru looked troubled, tears welling up in her eyes.
Shen Zhongyi was utterly disappointed; the anger surged within him, leaving him breathless as he began to cough violently. Zhao Xinru, as usual, hurried to get him some water and support him, but he ruthlessly pushed her down to the ground. He coldly said, “Don’t touch me with your filthy hands!”
In that moment, Zhao Xinru felt as if the sky had collapsed. She sat on the ground, her gaze hollow and filled with despair.
The situation quickly escalated to Madam Shen. Looking at the three people kneeling and sitting below her, Madam Shen sighed and slowly walked over to Zhao Xinru. She gently rolled up her sleeve and noticed that the once vibrant vermilion mark had faded significantly. A look of relief crossed her face as she reached out to help Zhao Xinru up, patting her hand and saying, “You’ve worked hard.”
This scene was shocking for both Shen Zhongyi and Su Yunxiang.
“Mother?” Shen Zhongyi asked in confusion. Did she know about all of this?
“Silly child, this is your mother’s intention. Xinru is a good daughter-in-law. At first, she didn’t want to agree either; it was your mother who pleaded with her. For the sake of our Shen Family, she had no choice but to comply.”
Madam Shen explained earnestly before turning to Su Yunxiang and adding, “Yunxiang, your Auntie has her difficulties too. It is her responsibility to carry on the family line for the Shen Family. I hope you can understand your grandmother’s actions.”
Su Yunxiang turned around and saw Zhao Xinru with her head lowered, tears brimming in her eyes. Despite her unwilling expression, she did not resist, and her body trembled slightly.
"Mother, have you lost your mind to come up with such a ridiculous idea? I could forgive you for doing this before, but now that Yunxiang has returned and someone else is shouldering the burden of the Shen Family, why do you still insist on this? Why is it specifically Yunxiang?" Shen Zhongyi shouted, voicing the doubts of everyone present.
Yes, why him? Even Zhao Xinru began to doubt it.
All eyes turned to Madam Shen, who forced a casual smile and said, "It's precisely because Yunxiang is not an outsider that if Xinru were to conceive his child, it would be a good thing."
"That's not a reason at all." Shen Zhongyi was furious. After saying this, he coughed several times with great effort. Hearing this, Zhao Xinru felt a pang of sadness in her heart and hurriedly got up to pat his back and offer him water to soothe his throat. "Zhongyi, stop talking. Take care of your health."
In the vast hall, only Shen Zhongyi's cough echoed in the emptiness.
"I think I know the reason," Su Yunxiang suddenly spoke up after remaining silent for a long time. "It's because you never intended to acknowledge me. What you want is just my blood so that this woman can conceive and leave heirs for the Shen Family. Am I right?"
"Impossible! If Mother really thought that way, why would she bring you back?" Zhao Xinru replied, raising her head with confusion in her eyes.
"Then how do you explain her contradictory behavior?" He retorted angrily, flames of fury burning in his gaze.
With the conversation reaching this point, Madam Shen had nothing left to hide. Her expression changed immediately as she spoke sharply, "Indeed. When my courtyard was on the verge of collapse and I sent word for you to come see him but you refused, I swore that since Su Yujun wanted my son to die without peace, I would ensure her son would not have it easy either. The doors of the Shen Family will forever remain closed to her."
It wasn’t that they refused; they simply had no idea because they had never seen any letters at all.
