Su Yunxiang laughed heartily, tears streaming down his face, his expression bizarre enough to send chills down everyone’s spine. Especially Zhao Xinru, who felt an inexplicable pain in her chest, a tightening sensation that made her frown deeply.
"You've finally spoken your mind. That's good. As for the Shen Family, I, Su Yunxiang, wouldn't even bother to step into their door. If it weren't for my mother, even if you carried me in on a grand sedan chair, I wouldn’t want to come. You disgust me. Even just standing here without doing anything, the thought that I’m breathing the same air as you makes me want to vomit."
Su Yunxiang's words echoed loudly in the quiet hall, causing Zhao Xinru to sway slightly, nearly losing her balance as if a gust of wind could knock her over.
In his eyes, she was perhaps the most despicable person in this place. He had witnessed her sordid actions, watching her climb into his bed like those women from the brothels… Thus, being involved with someone so ugly and vile was undoubtedly a disgrace for him.
Heaven is fair; it never bestows good fortune upon wicked people, especially not on someone as filthy as her.
A month passed quietly, and she had not conceived a child as everyone had hoped. Because of this, her mother’s attitude towards her became increasingly harsh and critical. However, Zhao Xinru secretly felt relieved; she was not yet mentally prepared to accept a child born out of hatred.
"Cousin-in-law, it’s getting late. We still have several miles to our next destination; it’s too late to make it there now. Why don’t we find a place to rest and set off tomorrow?" A man suddenly stopped in front of an inn by the roadside.
Ye Jingwen was a distant relative from her mother’s side. Although he was merely a distant cousin, he was quite capable and had been assisting with the Shen Family's business for years without any mistakes. Her mother had specifically sent him along this time for her to learn and gain experience.
Zhao Xinru nodded lightly in agreement, "Alright."
As Ye Jingwen went to register at the front desk, Zhao Xinru glanced around out of boredom. At that moment, she heard the sound of an opera singer performing from the second floor of the restaurant across the street. Curiosity piqued, her gaze was involuntarily drawn toward it.
"Wait? Isn’t that…"
Surprised, Zhao Xinru quickly pulled her gaze away, feeling anxious and mixed with a hint of doubt. Yet she couldn’t resist; she stole another glance with the corner of her eye…
It was Su Yunxiang.
Today, he was dressed in military uniform, the army green fabric showcasing his heroic demeanor. He stood tall, his posture as straight as a pine tree. Sitting across from him, sharing a meal, was another soldier. From the expressions and interactions between the two, it was clear they were well acquainted and had a good relationship. Beside them leaned two charming women, their smiles enchanting and their attire flamboyant. Even in a public place, they seemed oblivious to the surroundings as they nestled against the men, lighting cigarettes and pouring tea, exuding an air of intimacy.
Zhao Xinru felt as though her chest had been struck hard. She recalled Su Yunxiang's last words before he left that day; it seemed that in his heart, she truly could not compare to those flirtatious women.
"Cousin? Cousin?" Ye Jingwen waved her hand gently in front of her.
"What?" Zhao Xinru snapped back to reality, flustered.
Ye Jingwen smiled and said, "It's all set. Let's go inside."
Zhao Xinru nodded instinctively, acknowledging her words. It wasn't until the restaurant staff led them to the second floor that she realized something.
"What about my room?"
"The owner said there are many guests today; this is the only room left."
At first glance, this seemed reasonable. However, when Zhao Xinru caught a glimpse of his eyes, she couldn't help but recall the gaze of the man sitting across from Su Yunxiang earlier, leering at the singer in his arms—it was strikingly similar.
A sense of foreboding rose within her. In a panic, Zhao Xinru turned to flee, but before she could reach the door, her wrist was tightly grasped. Her face paled instantly as she exclaimed, "Ye Jingwen, what do you intend to do?"
"Cousin," Ye Jingwen replied, "Aunt said that as long as we fulfill her wishes and help the Shen Family bear a healthy baby boy, she will surely not mistreat us in the future."
Zhao Xinru widened her eyes, speaking in disbelief, "No... It's impossible. Mother promised me, just this once..."
"Don't be foolish. You know better than I do what kind of person Aunt is. Do you really think she would keep her promise before achieving her goals?" Ye Jingwen replied impatiently, leaning in closer to her.
"Please, don't! Let me go! I beg you, just let me go..."
