For the next half month, Zhao Xinru stayed in the hotel, and every night, Su Yunxiang would appear on time, only leaving quietly at dawn. Their relationship had become an open secret, and his attentive care and gentle demeanor towards her made her secretly resolve to act.
Zhao Xinru's confused eyes suddenly brightened, as if the fog had been lifted. She picked up the letter from her husband that he had given her on their wedding night, feeling anxious and unwilling to wait any longer. She hurried out of the hotel, intending to rush to Su Yunxiang's office.
However, just as she stepped out of the hotel, her footsteps halted abruptly at the corner. The bandit who had intercepted her before was standing arrogantly in a dead-end alley, conversing with someone while wearing a military uniform.
"Has everything been taken care of?" The man spoke with his back to her, but that overly familiar voice made Zhao Xinru's heart skip a beat—it was Su Yunxiang.
"Everything is done." The bandit hesitated for a moment before continuing, "Lieutenant, if you regret it now, it's not too late. While the people from Chastity Hall haven't arrived yet, you should quickly take Miss Zhao away."
The air seemed to freeze in that moment. After an unknown period of silence, Su Yunxiang's voice emerged, filled with endless fatigue, as if he had just fought an internal battle lasting a millennium.
"Er Bao, how many years have you followed me?"
The bandit named Er Bao pondered for a moment before replying, "When I was fifteen and there was a locust plague in my village, I escaped and nearly starved on the road. You saved me. Since then, I've been following you, Lieutenant. It's been almost ten years now."
"Ten years. Then you should understand... In my heart, nothing is more important than revenge..." He paused, his tone cold and filled with hatred. "The Shen family owes my mother and me; I will make them pay."
Er Bao standing before him did not respond but instead stared behind him as if he had seen a ghost.
Su Yunxiang sensed something and turned around to see Zhao Xinru standing not far away, her face pale as paper. Her red lips had been bitten until they bled, the vivid crimson staining her lips with an almost enchanting allure.
Zhao Xinru's slightly parted lips seemed ready to speak several times but ultimately held back. Seeing this, Su Yunxiang raised his hand to signal Er Bao to leave first.
"Do you have anything to explain?" Zhao Xinru asked, her voice trembling.
Su Yunxiang couldn't bear to meet her hopeful gaze, his eyes darting around until he finally replied hoarsely, "No."
Zhao Xinru slowly raised her hand and delivered a sharp slap across his handsome face. Tears welled up in her eyes as she said, "From the very beginning, you were plotting against me, weren't you? The bandits were fake, the rescue was fake, and pretending to be drugged to spend the night with me was also fake?"
Deny it... If only you would deny it, I would believe you.
But Su Yunxiang had no intention of doing so; his silence spoke louder than words.
Tears streamed down Zhao Xinru's clear face.
"You really are something. For revenge, you're willing to sleep with a woman you don't love," she said with a bitter laugh. "So what now? How do you plan to take revenge on the Shen Family..."
She abruptly stopped mid-sentence, her eyes widening in shock.
They had just mentioned Chastity Hall; could it be...?
"Are you really going to do this?" If her face had been pale but still held some color before, now all the blood had drained from it.
Su Yunxiang's gaze turned increasingly cold and ruthless. "Do you think there is any attack more lethal than a scandal in a deep-rooted family like this?"
Indeed, moral outrage could be considered the deadliest weapon.
But what should she do? A woman's virtue is of utmost importance; being unfaithful to her husband is something that society cannot tolerate. What would become of her then? Has he ever considered that?
