When I was five years old, my father brought home a boy who was three years older than me. His name was Ma Chao, and he had Super Masculinity Syndrome. At ten, he killed my mother with an axe. At eleven, he used a kitchen knife to murder my father. By the age of twelve, he ended his own life with a sharp iron rod. When I turned thirteen, I buried them with my own hands.
At twenty-five, my best friend Tong Qianqian died in her home. Her enormous body was crushed by a wardrobe that fell on her left side. When she was taken to the hospital, the doctors said it was too late. She suffocated because the cabinet had pinned her down.
On the day of her funeral, I found myself pinned down by Gao Jian, unable to cry. I struggled desperately but could not break free from his grip. When I woke up again, it was already bright outside. A circle of people surrounded me. Gao Jian's parents looked at me with red-rimmed eyes.
“Xiao Ran, you’re awake. Is there anywhere else that hurts?”
“Don’t worry; we won’t let this matter get out,” they said. “It’s our Gao Jian’s fault; please don’t hold it against him. He’s still young and doesn’t understand.”
“Please be magnanimous and don’t accuse him of rape.”
Their eyes were filled with pleading, but if one looked closely, there was a fleeting glimmer of guilt.
When the police came to ask me questions, I pretended to know nothing. They asked me, and I shook my head. They were unwilling to accept that answer and continued to press me, but I still shook my head.
I sheltered a rapist.
The police officer looked at me with frustration, "Young lady, you are a victim. You can't let your pride stop you from identifying the criminal. Doing so will only harm yourself!"
I shrugged nonchalantly, "I'm just a cheap woman. What's so strange about sleeping with the husband of Tong Qianqian, who has barely been buried?"
Gao Jian's parents stared at me in shock, as if they hadn't expected me to say that. Once they processed my words, they let out a heavy sigh of relief.
"Do you know each other?" The officer keenly sensed our unusual interaction.
I pointed to Gao Jian's mother, "She is my future mother-in-law."
Then I pointed to Gao Jian's father, "He is my future father-in-law."
I continued, "I like Gao Jian; I want to marry him."
Gao Jian's parents, who had initially been overjoyed to escape the rapist's accusations, were suddenly struck dumb by my declaration.
"You... how much do you want?"
I thought for a moment, "One million should do."
To them, their son not being a rapist was worth far less than buying a wife. Besides, I was the one eager for it.
After Gao Jian's parents and the crowd left, I overheard quite a few whispers.
"How shameless! Her best friend just died, and she's already eyeing the woman's husband."
"Who would have thought? She looks pretty but is so cheap at heart."
"Gao Jian's parents are too easygoing; if it were my daughter, I'd beat her to death."
I heard their words loud and clear, but I didn't care at all. What did they know?
Everyone is destined for hell.
My sun has already set.
I am willing to spend the rest of my life in darkness, in decay.
Gao Jian couldn't wait to marry me.
On the day of the wedding, his friends teased him.
Someone reached out, wanting to touch me: "Gao Jian, you lucky guy,
married two wives, each one so beautiful and obedient."
"You haven't seen how she was before; she used to throw tantrums every day, not half as gentle as Xiao Ran."
"Isn't that right? Gao Jian, what kind of luck did you have to trick such a stunning beauty into marrying you?"
Gao Jian basked in their flattery, but a hint of disdain flashed in his eyes.
He wrapped his arms around my waist: "Don't go too far; my wife is shy."
"Come on, let's go inside and celebrate; don't make a scene out here."
