Wang Jiefang understood his grandmother's intentions. "Grandma, don't worry. Even if I can't see, I can still cook in the kitchen!"
Seeing her grandson's confident demeanor, Wang Jiefang's grandmother decided not to press him further. It wasn't easy for him to lift his spirits, and she didn't want to add to his troubles.
Staying indoors was starting to feel a bit stifling for Wang Jiefang, so he found a stick and ventured outside like a blind man navigating the world. Just then, San Dama was coming out of her house. Upon seeing Wang Jiefang, she immediately turned around and went back inside, shutting the door behind her.
Wang Jiefang couldn't help but smirk at San Dama's reaction. She must have thought that with his blindness, the Wang family would soon be in dire straits and was afraid he might come knocking for help. Now she was avoiding him!
It seemed she feared that if they exchanged greetings, he might take the opportunity to latch onto their family for support. The Yan couple truly lived by the saying that not all families belong together. When Wang Jiefang was learning to cook, his master would often save leftovers for him. Each time he brought food home, Yan Bu Gui would take advantage and snag some for himself. Whenever the Yan family ran out of salt or firewood, they would come over to borrow from Wang Jiefang’s family.
After all, Wang Jiefang’s house was right across from theirs—neighbors were supposed to help each other out, right? His grandmother considered that it was just the two of them in their household and didn’t want to offend Yan Bu Gui. Besides, Yan Bu Gui never borrowed much at a time; whenever they came over, she always obliged! But why did they have to borrow and then not return things properly?
Oh, they had returned some items—like the pot scrubber—but it was a sorry sight. It had been nearly new when borrowed but came back worn out and nearly falling apart. If it weren't for a thin string tying it together, it might have completely disintegrated! That string looked like a last-minute fix; after receiving it back, Wang Jiefang's grandmother was so furious that she tossed it aside! Yan Bu Gui even remarked that Wang Jiefang's grandmother didn’t know how to manage her belongings properly.
This nearly sparked an argument between her and Yan Bu Gui!
From her memories, Wang Jiefang recalled his grandmother advising him not to wander into the courtyard too much. He took her words seriously and rarely went there. It seemed his grandmother had sensed that the courtyard wasn’t safe and feared he might get into trouble if he ventured there.
Wang Jiefang had no interest in the courtyard anyway; he simply used his stick as a walking aid and made his way out of the main yard.
When his grandmother saw him leave, she felt uneasy and set down her work to follow him.
Wang Jiefang was well aware of his grandmother's movements. He pretended not to notice her watching from behind. He knew that in order to reassure her about going out, he needed to show her that he could navigate outside with ease.
The street outside was quite empty; most adults were at work and children were at school. Only a few preschoolers were playing in the alley. As Wang Jiefang walked out with his stick, they caught sight of his cloudy eyes and immediately scattered in fright.
The children shouted as they ran away, "The blind man is coming! Quick, run!"
Wang Jiefang didn’t feel the need to stoop to their level; he maintained a calm demeanor as he strolled along. However, seeing how those children reacted made his grandmother feel a pang of heartache for her grandson.
The children rushed back home in a flurry, causing quite a commotion. The womenfolk came out to see what was happening and upon realizing it was Wang Jiefang outside, they gathered together to whisper among themselves.
