When Jia Zhang called out, Qin Huairu noticed that her mother-in-law's entire face was swollen and there was blood running from her nose.
"Oh dear, Mother, what happened to you? Who hit you?" Qin Huairu hurriedly set down the clothes she was holding and rushed over with concern.
"Never mind who hit me, quickly bring me a towel to wipe my nose!"
"Alright, Mother, just wait a moment. I remember there's still half a bottle of bruise medicine at home; I'll get it for you!"
Jia Zhang took the towel and pressed it against her nose, but it quickly soaked through with blood. Qin Huairu frowned at the sight, but knowing her mother-in-law's temper, she dared not say anything.
She carefully took out the bruise medicine and began to apply it to her mother-in-law.
"Ah! Be careful when you wipe! Are you trying to kill me so you can remarry? Just so you know, don't even think about it!"
Applying bruise medicine was never painless, and Jia Zhang didn’t care about that; she just kept scolding Qin Huairu.
Qin Huairu had long since grown accustomed to her mother-in-law's behavior and quietly reduced the pressure of her touch.
"That old hag from the Wang family, and that blind man too! How dare they hit me? Just wait; I won’t let them off easily!"
Qin Huairu understood now that it was Wang Jiefang's grandmother who had beaten her mother-in-law like this. She held no good feelings toward Wang Jiefang's family either; after all, they had refused to lend her family meat when she went to borrow some. As for the incident with Shazhu, it had nothing to do with her.
"Mother, why did you provoke their family? That Wang Jiefang can’t even beat Shazhu; he’s just a big bully!"
"I saw him outside and thought about how he wouldn’t even lend us meat. I said a few words to him, and who knew that old hag would come running over like a madwoman to hit me? If it weren't for her age, I would have fought back!" Jia Zhang complained.
Qin Huairu looked at her mother-in-law in disbelief. Knowing her as she did, she realized that aside from fearing the deaf old woman in the back courtyard, she wouldn’t hesitate to fight back against Wang Jiefang’s grandmother if provoked.
But this mother-in-law was quite foolish; if she feared the deaf old woman, did she really think Wang Jiefang’s grandmother would be any easier to deal with?
Feeling anxious, Qin Huairu asked her mother-in-law, "Mother, you really didn’t hit that Wang Jiefang’s grandmother, did you?"
"You little Qin Huairu! Whose daughter-in-law are you? Why are you so concerned about whether I hit that old woman? Speak up! Are you interested in that blind man?"
"Oh dear, Mother, where are your thoughts wandering? That Jiefang is only twenty; our son is already thirteen! How could we possibly be a match? I'm just worried that if you hurt that old woman, it might cause trouble. You know she's a military dependent!"
"If you hurt her and the neighborhood committee finds out, you'll be criticized at best or executed at worst! Have you forgotten how that Hu woman from Tianshui Well was executed?"
Hearing Qin Huairu's words made Jia Zhang tremble in fear. She indeed knew about that incident; it was said that the Hu woman had gotten into a conflict with a neighbor and accidentally pushed her down, causing a fracture. The neighbor happened to be a military dependent whose son had just died on the battlefield. When the armed forces found out about it, the Hu woman was taken away for execution on the same day!
Now Jia Zhang recalled that Wang's grandmother was also a military dependent. She turned pale as she looked at Qin Huairu. "Huairu, am I going to be executed? I really didn’t hit that old woman! I wanted to fight back but never succeeded!"
Hearing her mother-in-law say she wanted to fight back but couldn’t made Qin Huairu speechless. She knew her mother-in-law wouldn’t just take hits without retaliating—thankfully this time she hadn’t fought back!
