In the Mountain Temple, Jiang Lian'er wandered alone, trying to calm herself and accept the reality of her time travel.
She gazed at the ancient temple, where the moss on the walls seemed to tell tales of long-forgotten years, and the air was thick with a sense of antiquity. Jiang Lian'er felt a bitter ache in her heart; she was merely a modern middle school student, now trapped in this unfamiliar ancient world, facing an uncertain fate.
Suddenly, remnants of the original owner's consciousness seemed to linger, fleeing in fear and accidentally tumbling down the steps. In that moment, Jiang Lian'er's soul completely took over this body. She felt a wave of dizziness wash over her, and when she regained her senses, she could hear the sound of bustling footsteps outside.
Pei Yichen had arrived with his subordinates to investigate leads on the assassin who attempted to kill the emperor.
Jiang Lian'er understood that this was an opportunity to change her destiny. She forced herself to suppress her inner turmoil and quickly composed herself. First, she carefully observed her surroundings; the floor of the Mountain Temple was covered in dust, with only a few faint footprints suggesting someone had passed through recently.
Following the direction of the footprints, she noticed a corner where the dust had been slightly disturbed, as if someone had been hiding there. Jiang Lian'er cautiously approached while keeping an ear out for any sounds around her.
She crouched down and gently brushed aside the dust, discovering a loose floor tile. Intrigued, she pried it open with some effort, revealing a small package beneath.
Jiang Lian'er opened the package to find an exquisite dagger and a jade pendant engraved with strange symbols.
Next, she noticed a concealed window that appeared to have been tampered with.
The paper of the window was torn, and fresh scratches marred the windowsill. Standing by the window and peering outside, she spotted a grove behind the Mountain Temple where shadows flickered amidst the trees.
Jiang Lian'er refrained from acting recklessly; instead, she turned back to continue searching for clues within the Mountain Temple. Behind a dilapidated statue of Buddha, she discovered some peculiar scratch marks that seemed to have been left in haste.
Following the trail of scratches, she finally located a hidden compartment where an assassin had concealed several black stealth outfits and some poison.
Jiang Lian'er emerged from behind the statue, clutching the evidence she had gathered, just in time to encounter Pei Yichen.
Pei Yichen looked at the items in her hands, surprise evident in his eyes. Calmly, Jiang Lian'er recounted the clues she had discovered to him, analyzing clearly: "The footprints in the Mountain Temple, the disturbances in the corners, the broken window, and the hidden compartment behind the statue all indicate that the assassin had been hiding here. Moreover, these items suggest they are organized; this dagger is well-crafted, and the symbols on the jade pendant might be their mark. The night cloak and poison are tools they used for their crimes."
Listening to Jiang Lian'er’s analysis, Pei Yichen found himself increasingly impressed by this woman. He had initially thought Jiang Lian'er was merely an ordinary official's daughter, but he was astonished by her keen observation skills and clear thinking.
As she spoke, Jiang Lian'er maintained a resolute gaze. Although a hint of nervousness lingered within her, she worked hard to keep it from showing.
Pei Yichen began to act on the clues provided by Jiang Lian'er, dispatching men to search around the Mountain Temple and in the woods.
Sure enough, they soon spotted several suspicious figures. When the assassins realized their cover was blown, they fled in all directions. Pei Yichen and his subordinates engaged in a fierce battle with them.
Jiang Lian'er hid nearby, anxiously watching the fight unfold. She observed Pei Yichen's agile movements and exceptional swordsmanship, feeling a surge of admiration for him.
During the battle, Pei Yichen occasionally glanced at Jiang Lian'er to ensure her safety, worried that she might be harmed. This made Jiang Lian'er feel a warmth in her heart; amidst this unfamiliar ancient world, Pei Yichen's concern brought her a sense of reassurance.
After an intense struggle, Pei Yichen finally managed to capture one of the assassins. He approached Jiang Lian'er with a smile and said, "Miss Jiang, today we owe much to you. Without your insight, we might not have been able to locate the assassins so smoothly."
Jiang Lian'er blushed slightly and replied, "Mr. Pei is too kind; I merely stumbled upon these clues."
Pei Yichen regarded Jiang Lian'er with even greater curiosity.
He realized that her way of thinking was unlike that of ordinary women; her bravery and intelligence shone brilliantly during this crisis. Jiang Lian'er was also captivated by Pei Yichen's impressive demeanor and steady presence. She looked at him with gratitude and admiration in her eyes.
The two reached a preliminary agreement to cooperate, and Pei Yichen decided to escort Jiang Lian'er back to Jiang Residence. Knowing that returning home would bring more challenges and dangers, Jiang Lian'er steeled herself with determination; she would not sit idly by.
She believed that with the help of Pei Yichen, along with her own modern wisdom, she would be able to seek a glimmer of hope in the ancient Jiang Residence.
