Upon learning that she had been maliciously slandered, Jiang Lian'er realized that if she did not take action, she would be plunged into an irretrievable abyss. Thus, she resolutely decided to enter the palace and plead her case before the emperor.
On the day of her visit to the palace, the sky was overcast, as if foretelling the numerous difficulties that lay ahead.
With a heart full of trepidation, Jiang Lian'er arrived at the palace gates. Before she could approach, she felt an invisible pressure bearing down on her. The guards stationed at the entrance stood tall and stern, their expressions cold, each wielding a long spear like a statue of a gatekeeper.
Jiang Lian'er stepped forward and respectfully bowed to the guards, stating her identity and purpose: "Respected guards, I am Jiang Lian'er, the legitimate daughter of the Jiang family. I have urgent matters to discuss with His Majesty; I kindly ask you to relay my request."
However, the guards remained unmoved, their faces expressionless as they continued to stand there. Jiang Lian'er’s heart tightened as she raised her voice once more: "This matter concerns the reputation of my Jiang family and His Majesty's honor; I implore you to show some leniency."
At this moment, the lead guard slowly spoke, his voice icy: "Miss Jiang, without His Majesty's decree, no one is allowed to enter the palace. Please return."
Desperate and anxious, Jiang Lian'er knew time was of the essence. If she could not see the emperor soon, her reputation would be irreparably damaged.
She attempted to reason with the guards, speaking earnestly: "Please, I am truly wronged. Someone is maliciously framing me. If I cannot present my case before His Majesty, my family may face disaster, and His Majesty will be deceived by a villain."
Yet the guards remained unmoved, mechanically repeating: "Without a decree, no one may enter."
With no other options left, Jiang Lian'er resolved to seek another way.
She scanned her surroundings and suddenly noticed a large tree beside the palace wall, its branches extending into the inner courtyard.
Determined to take a risk, Jiang Lian'er gritted her teeth and made up her mind. She cautiously approached the tree, grasped its trunk with both hands, and began to climb.
Having never climbed a tree before, her movements were clumsy and awkward. Her hands were scraped and sore from the rough bark, but she held onto one conviction: she had to see the Emperor.
After much effort, Jiang Lian'er finally managed to pull herself up onto a branch. Lying flat on it, she looked down and felt a wave of dizziness wash over her, but she quickly steeled herself.
She slowly inched along the branch towards the palace wall. With each movement, the branch swayed slightly, sending her heart racing. Finally, she successfully climbed over the palace wall and jumped into the courtyard.
However, as soon as she entered, before she could catch her breath, she realized she had inadvertently stumbled into a forbidden garden.
The garden was vibrant with blooming flowers, but Jiang Lian'er had no time to admire them. The palace maids and eunuchs spotted her and began to shout in alarm: "An assassin! Someone come!"
Surrounded by the crowd, Jiang Lian'er found herself at a loss for words, filled with helplessness and despair.
The maids looked at her in terror, some even retreating to the side. The eunuchs shouted for guards, and chaos erupted throughout the garden.
Jiang Lian'er tried to explain, "I am not an assassin; I am Jiang Lian'er, the legitimate daughter of the Jiang family. I came to see His Majesty." But in the midst of the turmoil, no one paid her any attention.
Just as she was at a loss for what to do, several guards rushed in and surrounded her, their long spears aimed directly at her vital points.
A wave of desolation washed over Jiang Lian'er. She never imagined that in her quest to clear her name, she would find herself in such a dire situation.
Looking around at the hostile faces surrounding her, she felt utterly trapped. Was this truly how it would end for her?
