She had once been a caring kindergarten teacher, the first guide for children stepping into society. However, no one could have imagined that she was also a woman with a heart of stone.
Due to a minor conflict with a colleague, she turned 25 children into her scapegoats, maliciously adding sodium nitrite to their food.
Even more terrifying was the fact that this was not her first crime; two years prior, she had poisoned her husband over domestic disputes.
Had it not been for this incident coming to light, no one might have ever known. Ironically, she felt completely innocent about her actions, insisting that she never intended to harm the children but merely sought revenge against her colleague.
So, what exactly happened in this shocking poisoning case that stunned the nation?
Date of the incident: March 27, 2019.
Location: Jiaozuo City, Henan Province.

Around 9 AM that day, in a classroom of the "Meng Meng Kindergarten," the cries of children suddenly filled the air.
The teachers noticed that shortly after the children in the middle class had eaten their eight-treasure porridge, they began to develop purple lips and gray faces, uncontrollably vomiting. Some even collapsed on the ground, moaning in pain.
Meanwhile, Li, who was at work, received a call from the kindergarten principal informing him that his child was suddenly vomiting uncontrollably. He quickly set aside his work. As Li arrived at the kindergarten entrance, he heard the children crying inside, and his daughter lay unconscious in a teacher's arms.
Seeing that the ambulance had not yet arrived, an anxious Li grabbed his daughter and, along with another parent, intercepted a passing car to rush to the Second People's Hospital of Jiaozuo City.
At the hospital, watching the doctors perform emergency measures left Li feeling blank; he had no idea what had happened. His child needed an urgent gastric lavage, and the hospital issued a critical condition notice.
While Li's daughter was being treated, another parent, Ms. Zhang, rushed her son Xiao Junxi into the emergency room. In comparison, Xiao Junxi's condition was much more severe; even after an emergency gastric lavage, he remained in deep coma and required oxygen support from a ventilator to survive.
Seeing Xiao Junxi lying in the ICU in agony, Ms. Zhang's legs went weak, and she collapsed to the ground, crying uncontrollably.
A few minutes later, the remaining 23 children from the kindergarten class were rushed to nearby hospitals for emergency treatment. At that moment, an experienced doctor stated that this was definitely not a simple case of food poisoning; someone had intentionally poisoned the food, aiming to harm these innocent children.
Instantly, disbelief washed over everyone. They could not fathom who could be so cruel as to inflict such harm on a group of defenseless kids.
Meanwhile, after receiving the report, the Jiaozuo Police arrived at the kindergarten. They immediately sealed off all food in the kitchen and quickly sent the eight-treasure porridge that the children had eaten to the relevant departments for testing.
Soon, the test results came back, revealing that all food in the kindergarten kitchen contained no toxic substances. However, a large amount of sodium nitrite was detected in the leftover eight-treasure porridge from the kindergarten class. This confirmed that it was indeed a poisoning case targeting the kindergarten children.
In response to the incident, relevant authorities promptly activated their emergency response plan and established a leadership group for emergency handling, dedicating themselves to providing medical care for the children and conducting related investigations. Various departments flooded into the scene to investigate all staff members at the kindergarten.
At that moment, police discovered crucial evidence from the kindergarten's surveillance footage. They saw a teacher at the kindergarten acting suspiciously after being questioned; she threw a glass bottle from her pocket into a nearby trash can.
Moreover, footage from before the incident showed that around 9 AM on March 27th, this teacher had her back to the camera while pouring some suspicious substance into the porridge bowl of the kindergarten class.
Upon investigation, this individual was identified as Wang Yun, one of the teachers responsible for the younger class. The police believed Wang Yun was a prime suspect and immediately took her into custody.
As expected, tests revealed that the glass bottle Wang Yun had thrown away contained sodium nitrite consistent with that found in the eight-treasure porridge. Faced with irrefutable evidence, Wang Yun confessed to her crime of poisoning.
However, questions arose: why would Wang Yun, who was responsible for the younger class, poison children from another class? What could drive someone to such maliciousness? The prosecution would file charges, but there were disputes regarding sentencing.
According to assessments, among the 25 poisoned children, 21 suffered from minor injuries, three had slight injuries, and one child named Xiao Junxi remained in a coma in ICU with undetermined injuries; her husband also sustained minor injuries.
Since no fatalities occurred, according to relevant regulations, Wang Yun's maximum sentence could likely be life imprisonment—a result that none of the parents of these children wished to see.
According to the doctor's diagnosis, after several months of treatment, Xiao Junxi showed no signs of improvement and was highly likely to never wake up. Consequently, some individuals began to pressure Ms. Zhang, hoping she would sign a consent form to remove her child from life support and abandon treatment. They believed that if the child died after the removal of support, Wang Yun would certainly be sentenced to death.
For Ms. Zhang, however, this felt like she was being asked to end her son's life herself, akin to stabbing herself in the heart. Therefore, she vehemently rejected their suggestions, stating that even if her child were to become a vegetable, she would never give up on him.
As a result, the case stagnated during the trial phase, with no court date being set for a long time.
Unfortunately, on January 28, 2020, after ten months of desperate efforts to save him, Xiao Junxi could not be revived and became a victim of Wang Yun's pent-up rage. On July 15, 2020, the long-stalled Henan Jiaozuo Kindergarten Poisoning Case finally went to trial.
What infuriated everyone was that during the trial, although Wang Yun confessed and read an apology letter in court, she insisted that she never intended to harm the child; she only wanted to take revenge on her colleagues. This reasoning was not enough for anyone to forgive her.
Consequently, the parents of the children expressed their determination not only to hold Wang Yun criminally accountable but also to pursue civil compensation against her.
On September 28, 2020, the Jiaozuo Intermediate People's Court conducted its first-instance verdict and sentenced Wang Yun to death for the crime of endangering public safety by releasing hazardous substances.
After the verdict, Wang Yun appealed against the decision. However, due to the pandemic, it wasn't until March 17, 2022, that the Henan Provincial High People's Court rejected Wang Yun's appeal in its final ruling and upheld the original sentence.
On July 13, 2023, Wang Yun was identified and taken to the execution ground where her death sentence was carried out.
Thus, the Henan Jiaozuo Kindergarten Poisoning Case finally came to a close. Although Wang Yun received just punishment and ultimately paid with her life, it is hoped that relevant authorities learn from this case.
There must be an emphasis on children's mental health as well as on mental health education for teachers. The standards for becoming a kindergarten teacher should be raised so that such tragedies do not occur again and all children can grow up healthy and happy.
