It is often said that killing someone is merely a matter of hitting the ground. This demon, having been seduced by a woman over fifty when he was just sixteen, developed a gruesome penchant for mutilating the bodies of his victims after killing them.
Even more horrifying is that all the female corpses he left behind were disfigured. Some had their heads crushed and bodies torn apart, with brains oozing out; others had their lower bodies severed, leaving pools of blood; some were impaled with branches, sticks, or screwdrivers, their deaths too gruesome to bear.
In just over two years, he committed nine murders, heartlessly taking ten lives. Chillingly, aside from one male victim, the other nine were young women, including his third wife and a pregnant woman.
So who exactly is this monster responsible for such a series of bloody incidents?
Date of the incident: February 3, 2006.
Location: Heyuan City, Guangdong Province.
On this day, local police received reports from residents about a terrible stench emanating from an alley on Beizhi Street in Yuancheng District. The nearby residents initially thought it might be a dead rat in someone's home, but after searching every corner of their houses without finding anything, they grew increasingly concerned.
At that moment, they realized that the foul odor seemed to be coming from a third-floor room in a four-story building. Given that the male tenant of that room, Zhang Yuehua, had been missing since before the Spring Festival, an ominous feeling washed over them. They quickly contacted Zhang Yuehua's distant relatives to report the situation to the police.
As expected, when the police opened the door to the room, they discovered that the stench was indeed emanating from Zhang Yuehua's corpse. Forensic examination confirmed that he had been murdered approximately six days prior.
At the scene, investigators found a key that did not belong to Zhang Yuehua's room but rather to the room of a first-floor tenant named Zhang Youtian.
According to neighbors, Zhang Youtian had returned to his hometown for the Spring Festival. Why then was his key found at the crime scene? Consequently, police identified Zhang Youtian as a major suspect and began tracking him down.
At that moment, Zhang Youtian was completely unaware that he had been targeted by law enforcement. Instead, taking advantage of many shops reopening on the sixth day of the New Year, he wandered around with Zhang Yuehua's phone, television, and video recorder in search of buyers.
On February 4, 2006, as Zhang Youtian prepared to sell the stolen goods to a market restroom manager named Zhu, several plainclothes officers rushed in and arrested him on the spot.
During interrogation, Zhang Youtian readily confessed to murdering Zhang Yuehua. Shockingly, as the investigation deepened, police discovered that he was responsible for not just one murder but as many as ten. Aside from the male victim Zhang Yuehua, all other victims were women.
On October 29, 2003, a mere twenty-year-old named Lin visited a friend's house in Dongta Town of Donghu County.
Around 10 PM, since his home was near Shuntian Town, adjacent to Dongta Town, he decided to take a motorcycle taxi home instead of staying at a friend's place. Unbeknownst to him, the driver he casually flagged down was none other than Zhang Youtian, a man more sinister than a devil.
Zhang Youtian, noticing that Xiaolin was young and beautiful and alone at such a late hour, felt a surge of malicious intent.
As the motorcycle approached a desolate road in Shuntian Town, he suddenly swerved sharply, steering the bike onto a secluded path and falsely claiming it was a shortcut. However, when Xiaolin sensed something was amiss and questioned him, she was taken aback when Zhang Youtian shamelessly demanded to engage in sexual relations with her.
Faced with such an outrageous request, Xiaolin refused vehemently and jumped off the motorcycle, attempting to escape. But after only a few steps, she was caught and pinned down in the mud by Zhang Youtian.
Terrified, Xiaolin struggled desperately and cried for help, but in the wilderness, her screams were futile; they only served to infuriate Zhang Youtian further. Feeling that Xiaolin's lack of cooperation prevented him from venting his frustrations, he brutally strangled her to death in a fit of rage.
Horrifyingly, Zhang Youtian did not find relief in killing her; instead, he desecrated her corpse and subjected it to unspeakable cruelty after his release of pent-up anger.
Seeing Xiaolin's lifeless eyes wide open in death ignited his fury anew. He picked up a large rock and smashed her skull into pieces. Then he gathered branches from around and inserted them into her lower body. After completing these heinous acts, Zhang Youtian finally calmed his rage and rode away on his motorcycle.
Regrettably, the crime scene yielded no valuable clues. With no DNA database or surveillance equipment available at the time, the case made no significant progress beyond some tire tracks left by the motorcycle.
On January 16, 2004, around 11 PM, Zhang Youtian arrived near a rest stop for long-distance buses on National Highway 205 in Lankou Town. At that moment, 24-year-old Xiaomei and 20-year-old Xiao Zhen flagged him down, asking for a ride to Lankou Town street.
Seeing two young girls carrying luggage, Zhang Youtian assumed they were migrant workers returning home for the New Year and thought they must have money. A malicious idea of robbery and murder quickly formed in his mind.
As the motorcycle traveled along a particularly dark stretch of road without streetlights on Route 155, he veered onto an unnamed path leading into the mountains.
In the pitch blackness of the night, neither girl realized they had strayed from their route until Zhang Youtian stopped the bike and turned off the engine. It was then that they understood something was wrong.
But it was too late; just as they realized they needed to escape and call for help, Zhang Youtian had already pulled out a wrench and mercilessly struck Xiaomei down first. Xiao Zhen was paralyzed with fear, kneeling on the ground begging for mercy while pleading with Zhang Youtian to spare her life because she was pregnant.
Unfortunately, Zhang Youtian had abandoned all humanity and conscience; with several brutal blows, he shattered Xiao Zhen's skull before fleeing the scene with 500 yuan stolen from both girls.
On September 17, 2004, through an introduction, Zhang Youtian married 40-year-old Xiao Ying, becoming his third wife. Tragically, Xiao Ying had no idea that her husband was a blood-stained murderer; she believed he was someone who could accompany her through the rest of her life.
On the night of February 7, 2005, Zhang Youtian had a fierce argument with his wife over financial issues. In a fit of rage, he grabbed a hammer and brutally killed her, then buried her body beneath a bamboo grove in the village under the cover of darkness.
After committing the crime, Zhang Youtian spent a day cleaning the scene and claimed to others that Xiao Ying had left home due to a quarrel.
In the early hours of October 18, 2005, while driving his motorcycle past a hotel in Yuancheng District, Zhang Youtian encountered a woman named Xiaofang, who was 32 years old and had a history of mental illness. She flagged him down, asking for a ride to Xiantang Town.
Typically, motorcycle drivers would not accept such passengers because Xiantang Town was quite far from Yuancheng District. Accepting this fare would likely result in an empty return trip, making it an unprofitable endeavor.
However, seeing that Xiaofang was somewhat attractive yet seemed mentally unstable sparked sinister thoughts in Zhang Youtian. He decided to take her to Xiantang Town's Xu Dong Village, where he violently killed her with a rock.
Frustrated after finding no money on Xiaofang, Zhang Youtian desecrated her body and then used ten wooden sticks and other objects to stuff into her lower body.
Days later, Xiaofang's body was discovered. Although there was surveillance footage showing her getting into a motorcycle taxi, the images were too dark and blurry to identify Zhang Youtian, who wore a helmet and drove an unregistered motorcycle. Consequently, the case remained unsolved for an extended period.
Later on, unable to endure the poverty and Zhang Youtian's volatile temper, his wife drank pesticide one night, leaving behind their four-year-old son and two-year-old daughter. Subsequently, Zhang Youtian had no choice but to rely on driving his motorcycle taxi to support his family. The daily exposure to harsh weather while working took a toll on him, making him increasingly irritable and aggressive.
Even more terrifying was how the trauma from years past began to take root in his mind. He believed that his current misfortunes were due to that landlady's actions; otherwise, he would have already settled in Dongguan and become wealthy.
Thus, on October 29, 2003, he began preying on young women to satisfy his greed for money and lustful desires, leading to a series of heinous crimes.
On September 27, 2008, following approval from the Supreme People's Court, Zhang Youtian was taken to the execution ground and shot dead. With this, the evil life of Human Demon Zhang Youtian came to an end.
