The mountains resembled beasts, and the green waters ran deep. In the early morning, the area around Mou Shui city was tranquil and peaceful.
The young attendant of a small inn was reluctantly roused by the Innkeeper, who urged him to remove the door planks and prepare for business. Just as he was busy, a sudden sound of galloping hooves echoed through the streets.
"Who is that, riding like a madman so early in the morning?" The attendant paused his work, widened his eyes, and pulled the door open a bit more to peek outside.
He saw a large red horse galloping down the long street towards him, with a figure dressed in white atop it. The white-clad rider on the red horse looked like a streak of white and red lightning racing straight toward the attendant. Instinctively, he took a step back, but before he could clearly see the rider's face, a sudden downpour of liquid fell from above, splattering onto his face in a sticky mess.
Frantically, he wiped his face with a cloth from his waist, only to find that the once gray cloth was now drenched in bright red.
His eyes widened in horror as his legs began to tremble uncontrollably. Just as he thought to retreat further, the red horse came to a halt right in front of the inn. The rider, clad in white, had an alarmingly pale complexion and slightly turned their head to look at the attendant. Their lips moved as if they wanted to say something.
Trembling with fear, the attendant shook his head and stammered, "Y-You... who are you?"
The white-clad figure pointed at their neck. The attendant instinctively looked over and was immediately struck with terror, collapsing onto the ground in shock!
A deep gash marred the rider's neck, blood gushing out in torrents—it was a horrifying sight!
The red liquid that had splattered on the attendant's face was evidently blood spraying from the rider's neck.
Shaking uncontrollably, the attendant struggled to turn back toward the inn and shouted loudly, "Innkeeper! Innkeeper! There's... there's a dead person! So much blood!"
From inside the inn came a booming voice. The Innkeeper, with his round belly protruding, flung open the door and shouted, "You little brat! I told you to get up early and work—what are you yelling about?"
At the moment the innkeeper slammed the door and stormed out, the figure in white on the chestnut horse outside suddenly tilted his neck, and a perfectly good head rolled to the innkeeper's feet.
A chilling scream that could shake the heavens and make ghosts weep echoed through the air, and then everything fell silent.
“Captain, Constable Zeng! Something big has happened, something big... Constable Zeng …”
Calls echoed from within the Yamen of Mou Shui city.
A young man, short in stature and dressed in purple Bounty Hunter attire, hurriedly rushed to a door, taking two steps at a time as if he were a gust of wind.
Suddenly, he felt an arm drape over his shoulder, startling the young Bounty Hunter. He spun around quickly, only to find a slightly lazy smile on the face of Zeng Liang.
The young Bounty Hunter exclaimed in surprise, “ Constable Zeng, how did you end up behind me?”
Zeng Liang, dressed in a green robe, rubbed his eyes and replied with a smile, “What are you talking about? You suddenly ran in front of me. Now tell me, what do you need?”
Wang Long slapped his forehead and jumped up again, exclaiming, “Something big has happened! I just received a case—someone has been murdered, and it was gruesome! I heard they even had their head chopped off, blood spraying everywhere!”
A mysterious smile suddenly flickered across Zeng Liang's previously lazy face as he said lightly, “Someone died. There hasn’t been a murder in Mou Shui city for ten years. I didn’t expect that within just ten days of my appointment as Zeng Liang, I would encounter such an event. Heh, it seems that heaven is treating me well!”
