Zeng Liang changed his attire and followed the small Bounty Hunter, Wang Long, to the scene of the crime.
The innkeeper and the staff were still present, but at that moment, they could only shake their heads like fools at anyone who approached.
Chestnut Stallion was also there, quietly tethered in a corner, no longer able to run wildly.
The man in white was still there, though his head was now severed from his body.
His head had been placed inside a wooden box by an earlier Bounty Hunter. As Zeng Liang approached to take a look, he wrinkled his nose at the pungent smell of blood that assaulted him.
The head in the box still bore a hint of the terror it experienced at the moment of death, yet there was little sign of pain or sorrow.
Zeng Liang slowly walked over to where the body had fallen. Upon closer inspection, he noted that the man in white was dressed in immaculate white garments that were completely unstained and undoubtedly expensive; it seemed he was someone of considerable means.
Zeng Liang gestured for the small Bounty Hunter, Wang Long, who had been trailing behind him. This little Bounty Hunter had always been overlooked until Zeng Liang's appointment, after which he was promoted and given many lucrative tasks. Since then, he had become entirely devoted to Zeng Liang.
Zeng Liang looked at Wang Long and asked, "Do you know this man?"
Wang Long examined the body carefully and replied with certainty, "I don't recognize him. He must not be one of our Mou Shui city people."
At that moment, several figures appeared at the end of the street, with none other than Sun Man, the county magistrate of Mou Shui city, leading the way.
Sun Man had a plump face and a bulging belly; true to his name, he was indeed full and prosperous.
The Bounty Hunter reported a serious case of murder, which left Sun Man, the county magistrate who had enjoyed nearly a decade of peace, in a state of panic. Sweat dripped down his pale face as he repeatedly wiped it with a handkerchief.
Upon arriving at the corpse, just a glance made him feel nauseous.
It was worth mentioning that this was the first time in ten years that the magistrate had encountered a real dead body, and his first sight was that of a headless corpse.
Sun Man spun around aimlessly and rushed to Zeng Liang, about to ask a question when suddenly Wang Long shouted from the side, “ Constable Zeng, master Sun, there’s something suspicious here!”
A glint of intelligence flashed in Zeng Liang's eyes as he stepped aside to let Sun Man pass and approached Wang Long.
Wang Long was spreading open the palm of the white-clad corpse, revealing a golden object that rolled out. Zeng Liang picked it up and examined it closely. Behind him, Sun Man frowned and said, “What is this? Isn’t it just a Gold Button?”
Hearing the magistrate's complaint, Wang Long lowered his head.
Zeng Liang patted his shoulder and smiled, “Not bad, you did well.”
Sun Man could no longer contain his curiosity and asked, “ Constable Zeng, have you found any clues? Can we catch the murderer?”
Zeng Liang slightly bowed and replied, “So far, I haven’t discovered anything yet. But soon there will be clues.”
“Oh?” Sun Man’s face lit up upon hearing Zeng Liang’s words. He immediately pressed on, “What clues? Hurry up and tell me!”
“It!” Zeng Liang pointed behind Sun Man. He quickly turned around only to see a large red horse standing there, lowering its head and wagging its tail.
Sun Man was puzzled. "What do you mean by this horse? How is it a clue?"
Zeng Liang nodded and smiled. "The victim was undoubtedly killed while on the horse. The only witness, or rather, the witness horse, is certainly a clue!"
As he spoke, he approached the chestnut horse and patted its head, saying, "Although it can't talk, it can lead us to find out more."
Then Zeng Liang swiftly mounted the horse, turned its head, and rode off in the direction from which the chestnut horse had come.
Wang Long looked at Sun Man, who wore a similarly confused expression, and said, "My lord, what... should we do?"
"Enough nonsense! What is there to discuss? Send a few people to follow Constable Zeng. If anything happens to him, I will hold you responsible," Sun Man shouted angrily.
