Before long, Wang Long returned first, followed by two Bounty Hunters carrying a person draped in white cloth, obscuring their face.
Zeng Liang frowned slightly and asked, "What happened?"
Wang Long looked embarrassed and said, "Captain, I took Deng Gang home, but his wife absolutely refused to accept him. She said that if we wanted to take the body, we must return Immortal Gathering Pavilion to her."
Zeng Liang sighed softly and remarked, "It’s true that a husband reflects the nature of his wife. Deng Gang enjoyed the splendors of life, yet in death, no one is willing to see him off. It’s poetic justice!"
After a pause, Zeng Liang continued, "Then let’s store his body along with Shan Jie’s in the Yamen's Coroner's Office for now."
This pair of mortal enemies found themselves sharing a room in death, truly an unpredictable twist of fate.
Wang Long turned and led the two Bounty Hunters toward the back of the Yamen to the Big Black Room, which served as the Coroner's Office. It had been vacant for many years since there hadn’t been a murder in Mou Shui city for at least a decade.
Song Hui and a group of Purple-Clad Constable s also returned. Zeng Liang quickly scanned the crowd and spotted someone being escorted—bound hand and foot—it was Lin Kong.
Song Hui said, "Captain, we’ve captured this guy. He’s quite clever; knowing he couldn’t run fast enough, he hid in a corner by the city wall. Little did he know that we Bounty Hunters grew up playing in those very places. A quick search was all it took to drag him out."
Zeng Liang nodded with satisfaction and said, "Good job! Everyone has contributed this time! After I report to master Sun, I’ll make sure you all get extra helpings of meat!"
The Bounty Hunters cheered joyfully in response.
Zeng Liang kept Song Hui behind while the other Bounty Hunters went off to rest.
Zeng Liang looked at the small-eyed, big-nosed Lin Kong and coldly asked, "Do you know why I asked you to come back?"
Lin Kong kept staring at the ground, shaking his head like a rattle. Song Hui shouted, "What are you shaking your head for? Constable Zeng is asking you a question; hurry up and answer!"
Startled by Song Hui's shout, Lin Kong shivered and hurriedly said, "I... I don't know, I don't know."
Zeng Liang slowly brought the knife he had taken from the green Sugar Figurine in front of Lin Kong. Upon seeing the knife, Lin Kong's body went limp, collapsing to the ground with a panicked expression, his gaze darting around.
Zeng Liang spoke slowly and deliberately, "I want to know what this blade is used for."
After a long silence, Lin Kong remained speechless. Song Hui stomped his foot and pretended to kick Lin Kong. With his eyes tightly shut, Lin Kong squeezed out three words through clenched teeth: "I... don't know..."
Zeng Liang's gaze was sharp as it swept over Lin Kong's face. Suddenly, he sneered, "Well then, since Young Master Lin has such a poor memory, let's give him some time to think it over."
As he said this, his eyes fell on Wang Long, who had just returned. "Wang Long, where in the Yamen is the coolest place that can help someone calm down? Hurry up and take Lin Kong there."
Wang Long first looked confused but then seemed to understand. He grabbed Lin Kong and headed toward the back of the Yamen to the Big Black Room. Song Hui watched in surprise and exclaimed, "The Coroner's Office?"
Zeng Liang replied indifferently, "Since we living people can't help him remember anything, perhaps the dead can jog his memory. Song Hui, tonight have a few people make some noise outside the Big Black Room—make it as loud as possible so that Lin Kong has something to think about." Song Hui grinned and agreed.
The next day, as Zeng Liang had just woken up and gotten out of bed, Song Hui was already standing at the door with a delighted expression. "Captain, that fellow is scared out of his wits; he can't hold it any longer and is banging on the door wanting to see you."
Zeng Liang picked up a cup of tea from the table and took a sip. "No rush; let’s wait a little longer so he can think things through clearly!"
After more than half an hour, Lin Kong was finally brought out of the Coroner's Office. When Zeng Liang looked at Lin Kong again, he saw that his face was as pale as paper, and his small eyes were now wide open, filled with bloodshot veins.
Zeng Liang slowly asked, "Lin Kong, is your mind clear now?"
Lin Kong nodded blankly. Zeng Liang once again held knife in front of him and asked, "What exactly did you use it for?"
Lin Kong stared blankly for a moment, his mouth opening and closing without sound. Zeng Liang coldly remarked, "It seems your mind is still not fully clear. Song Hui, take him back to the dark..."
Before Zeng Liang could finish his sentence, Lin Kong had already collapsed at Zeng Liang's feet, shouting repeatedly, "I remembered! I remembered! I know! I will tell you... I will tell you..."
