As Zeng Liang was still lost in a warm dream, he was suddenly jolted back to reality by a violent shaking. Opening his eyes, he saw two panicked and pale-faced Bounty Hunters—Wang Long and Song Hui.
The two of them exclaimed in distress, “ Constable Zeng, Deng Gang... he... has come back to life!”
Upon hearing Wang Long and Song Hui's words, Zeng Liang immediately roused the other Bounty Hunters and led them to the Embalming House behind the Yamen.
When they arrived, they indeed found a headless corpse lying in front of the house, dressed in Deng Gang's attire. Zeng Liang frowned and asked, “Where is his head?”
Song Hui pointed towards the Big Black Room and said, “It seems to have rolled back there.”
Zeng Liang's eyes gleamed with determination as he ordered, “Go find it. We must retrieve his head.”
“Yes,” the Bounty Hunters replied. However, after searching thoroughly around the Black Room several times, they found no trace of a head. Song Hui was puzzled and shook his head repeatedly, saying, “It’s impossible; it clearly rolled over there. Could it have... flown away?”
“Don’t be ridiculous!” Zeng Liang could no longer tolerate such nonsense and scolded him. Just then, a louder commotion erupted from another side of the Yamen.
Zeng Liang turned to see several disheveled Bounty Hunters running towards them, their faces even more frantic as they shouted, “ Constable Zeng, something terrible has happened! There’s been a prison break!”
“What!” Zeng Liang exclaimed, leading all the Bounty Hunters to the Yamen's prison.
Due to the banquet, half of the guards had been called away, allowing the thieves to take advantage of the situation.
Zeng Liang looked at several guards who had been knocked unconscious inside the cell and turned back to ask, “Who was taken?”
“Reporting to Constable Zeng, it was the prisoner who was just brought in—Li Changjiang!”
Zeng Liang's heart sank as he felt an increasing sense of suspicion. First Deng Gang came back to life, and now Li Changjiang had been rescued from prison. Wasn’t all of this too bizarre?
Zeng Liang arrived in front of the cell where Li Changjiang was held. The cell door stood wide open, and inside was a small table laden with a few dishes and a jug of wine.
The sky was beginning to lighten, and the troublesome night had finally passed.
While chaos reigned at Mou Shui Yamen, two figures darted like startled rabbits towards the outskirts of Mou Shui city. Upon closer inspection, one of them was supporting the other as they ran frantically.
The pair stopped in a grove not far from Mou Shui city.
One of them was the weary Li Changjiang, while the other wore a black veil and dark clothing, concealing a small bundle beneath their garments, making it impossible to discern their features.
Li Changjiang glanced around and gasped, "Thank you, thank you."
The figure in black coldly chuckled, "If it weren't for your capable handling of matters and your tight-lipped nature, I wouldn't have bothered to save you!"
Li Changjiang quickly nodded, "Yes, yes! How could I dare to disobey your orders? Whatever you say, I, Li, would certainly brave fire and water without hesitation!"
The figure in black pulled several silver coins from the bundle and said, "I've arranged for a house for you by Lake Island. Take this money and go immediately. Remember, never come back."
Li Changjiang looked at the coins with delight. "Good, definitely!" As he reached out to take the silver, suddenly a flash of white steel emerged from the black figure's sleeve, thrusting towards Li Changjiang's chest. With a sharp clang, Li Changjiang recoiled, clutching his chest as he gazed at the figure in black with fear. "You... are you really going to kill me?"
The figure in black advanced coldly on Li Changjiang. "Hmph! A dead man keeps secrets better than a living one." Seeing the figure approach step by step, Li Changjiang suddenly exclaimed, "Aren't you afraid I'll betray you?"
"Ha ha ha!" The figure in black laughed as if hearing the greatest joke. With arms spread wide, they mocked, "You want to betray me? In this desolate wilderness, who would you sell me out to? Who could you possibly tell?"
"I could!" The laughter of the figure in black was abruptly cut off by a voice that pierced through the air. Their expression changed dramatically as they turned to see two individuals slowly stepping into the grove from outside. In disbelief, they asked, "You... how did you come here?"
It turned out that the two individuals were Zeng Liang and Bounty Hunter Wang Long. Zeng Liang smiled and said, "Because someone betrayed you."
The man in black glared coldly at Li Changjiang, his gaze sharp as a knife. Li Changjiang instinctively retreated behind Zeng Liang and said, " Constable Zeng, what you wrote on the note is absolutely correct; he really wants to kill me. Please save me quickly, I will tell you everything."
"What did he write?" the man in black asked icily.
"Birds Are Shot, Bows Are Hidden; Birds Are Safe, But the Rabbit Dies and the Dog Is Cooked," Zeng Liang enunciated clearly. These were the very words he had written on a note and mixed with the food sent to Li Changjiang. It was then that Li Changjiang had cleverly placed a solid stone against his chest, narrowly avoiding the man's deadly strike.
The man in black snorted coldly. "How did you find your way here?"
Zeng Liang smiled but had not yet spoken when Li Changjiang pulled out a small pouch from his bosom, filled with green luminescent powder, which had also been sent along with the food.
The man in black stared at Zeng Liang and suddenly threw his head back in laughter. Zeng Liang waited patiently for him to finish before saying, "You are indeed clever."
The man in black sneered. "But you are even smarter. When did you start suspecting me? Did I reveal too many flaws?"
"Your thoughts are meticulous, and your schemes are nearly flawless. However, no one is perfect; even the most careful plans can have oversights. You overlooked two key points," Zeng Liang replied calmly. He then took out a small golden object from his pocket—tiny and exquisite—it was none other than the Gold Button, an important piece of evidence that exposed Deng Gang!
