Yao Feixue couldn't resist coming over to see her new shirt the afternoon after work.
"This shirt was made for me, right? Let me take a look," she said, holding the shirt up against herself.
"Yes, you can try it on. I made a few adjustments for you," Ye Fangfei replied.
Ye Fangfei's shirt was slightly loose, designed to be paired with a skirt. The shirt made for Yao Feixue had a few darts at the waistline, accentuating her figure beautifully. Of course, she hadn't taken in too much; this era was conservative, and she had only made a slight adjustment.
Yao Feixue was very pleased with it. "No need to try it on; I trust you. Your craftsmanship is amazing! Can I come to you for clothes next time? If my friends want clothes made, can they come to you too?" she thought about how her friends would envy her wearing this shirt to work.
"Sure, I can help out when I have time," Ye Fangfei said. After these two encounters, she found that although Yao Feixue was a bit proud, she wasn't difficult to get along with. Plus, now that she didn't have a job, making clothes for others could help supplement her household income.

"Where did you have it made? I want one too!"
"Right! Feixue, how much does it cost to have a shirt made? If it's reasonable, I want one as well!"
Several young women surrounded Yao Feixue with questions.
"It's not cheap; I used a whole piece of fabric," she replied. "And she's not just any tailor; she's the new bride from my in-law's courtyard. She only agreed to help me because we live in the same courtyard."
"A whole piece of fabric? That really isn't cheap!"
At the tailor shop outside, the cost of making a piece of clothing is sky-high, nearly eight dimes. It's ridiculous, really. This is something a particularly frugal woman often says.
It's not cheap, but have you seen the styles available for a lower price outside?
Those who work here all have some connections at home; they aren't short on money. Whenever something new comes out, they rush to buy it. It's as if not buying what everyone else has would make them look down upon you.
"Feixue, why don't you ask if you can get a discount? I don't have any extra fabric, but I can trade with food stamps," said Liu Shaoli, who usually gets along well with Yao Feixue. Her father is the deputy director of a towel factory, and her mother is also a union official.
Their family is well-off and doesn't lack for her small expenses, so she speaks with confidence.
"Alright, I'll ask for you." Yao Feixue isn't foolish; although she appears proud most of the time, that's just her attitude towards the less ambitious neighbors in the courtyard. She doesn't act that way around people of notable backgrounds.
"Yes, I can use food stamps too."
"And me."
The young women working in the goods building are all at an age where they care about their appearance, and their families are doing well.
