Without any hesitation, I have no qualms about spending my ration tickets; if it comes down to it, I can always go home for a meal. Besides, I could endure a couple of hungry days as long as I have new clothes to wear.
At that moment, an unpleasant voice interrupted: "Hmph, you all are indulging in hedonism and deserve to be criticized." It was Wang Xiaona, the sworn enemy of Yao Feixue.
Wang Xiaona's aunt held a managerial position at the goods building. When the time came to select a manager for the building, the choice was between Yao Feixue's father and Wang Xiaona's aunt. In the end, Yao Feixue's father won and became the manager of the goods building. Wang Xiaona's aunt remained in her position but was resentful. Over the years, she had made things difficult for Yao Feixue's father, leading to a fierce rivalry between Yao Feixue and Wang Xiaona, where they would seize any opportunity to undermine each other.
"Making a piece of clothing is hedonism? Then what do you call that rag you're wearing? Capitalism?" Yao Feixue shot back. "Who doesn't make a few pieces of clothing these days? Even the villagers buy fabric when they get their year-end bonuses!" She wasn't going to let Wang Xiaona get away with it.
Wang Xiaona’s comments didn’t sit well with others either; after all, everyone was planning to make new clothes. Who did she think she was, acting so high and mighty?
"Xiaona, that's not right. I earn my own money; what's wrong with buying fabric to make myself a piece of clothing? How does that equate to hedonism?" someone chimed in.
"Exactly! I work hard every day; how does that make me indulgent?" another added. "If we follow your logic, none of us should ever make clothes again."
The crowd began to voice their discontent towards Wang Xiaona. No matter how articulate she was, she couldn't compete against so many voices. Besides, she wasn't particularly skilled at arguing.
"I'm not saying making clothes is wrong; it's just that hiring people to do it for you is opportunistic! Where did I go wrong?" Wang Xiaona muttered.
"How is that opportunistic? We're helping each other out! We can't sew ourselves, so our neighbors help us," someone retorted.
"If my neighbor is struggling and I give them some fabric, isn't that helping a comrade? The leaders have said we should support one another; how did that turn into opportunism in your mouth?" Yao Feixue was much more persuasive than Wang Xiaona, leaving her speechless.
"This is all about mutual help. Just like when you had your child, I watched the counter for you. When I have my child in the future, you’ll have to help me too. It's all give and take; it has nothing to do with speculation," Liu Shaoli expressed her discontent towards Wang Xiaona's baseless accusations.
Seeing that no one was siding with her, Wang Xiaona cursed inwardly at the crowd's lack of support and fell silent.
As everyone noticed that it was time for the goods building to open, they returned to their respective counters to get busy.
Meanwhile, Ye Fangfei was unaware of this commotion. She was at home, measuring a piece of green cotton fabric that Yao Feixue had given her as payment.
The weather was getting colder by the day, and Ye Fangfei wanted to make a thin cotton jacket. She had plenty of fabric in her trunk, all provided by Hao Chunying. However, none of it was as nice in color as the piece Yao Feixue had given her.
She decided to use this green fabric along with a layer of cotton to create a thin jacket that would be just right for wearing indoors. Feeling pleased with her plan, Ye Fangfei picked up her scissors and began cutting away.
By the time Yao Feixue came over again in the afternoon, Ye Fangfei's thin jacket had already taken shape.
"Fangfei, your craftsmanship is truly impressive! This thin jacket looks amazing!" Yao Feixue exclaimed, feeling familiar enough with Ye Fangfei to pick up the jacket and hold it against herself without any hesitation.
