"Since you know you've benefited from them, why don’t you send something over for the third family’s baby? You seem to have no problem taking from them," Tang Zhi scoffed at Wang Zhaodi's little schemes.
"I would love to, but since my mother-in-law hasn’t acknowledged anything, why should I take the initiative as a sister-in-law?" Wang Zhaodi replied. "Besides, everything I have is hard-earned; how can I bear to give it away?"
"Oh really? You can't bear to give away your own things but are always thinking about what others have? Your sister-in-law isn’t foolish," Tang Zhi pointed out.
"Look at how things are now. The third couple has nothing left except for the New Year gifts," he added.
"That can't be true! They aren't lacking in basic necessities; they wouldn't hold a grudge just because we didn't give them anything," Wang Zhaodi said skeptically.
Tang Zhi no longer wanted to talk to her; she was just a fool. It wasn't like the other person lacked anything; they had their own children. When someone had a baby, sending gifts was just common courtesy, but if you acted like you didn't know, that was another matter entirely. They certainly wouldn't rush to send you gifts again; they weren't desperate.
If he had known it would turn out this way, he would have sent something over from the start. Wang Zhaodi regretted it too. After all, Ye Fangfei was genuinely generous; she offered to give away fabric that was hard to come by in the countryside. If she had made a small outfit for the child and sent it over, she would have surely remembered her kindness. There was no way she would be stingy with anything.
In reality, a small piece of clothing didn't require much fabric at all. Looking back now, it seemed trivial to have blown things out of proportion. Not only Wang Zhaodi regretted it; Zhang Man also felt remorseful.
"I told you to make some small clothes for San Dimei's child and send them over, but you insisted it wasn't necessary," she said. "You said San Dimei was generous and wouldn't mind such trivial matters. Look at how things turned out now."
