"Alright, here you go. What are you in such a hurry for? There's still more here," Ye Fangfei said as she popped another segment of orange into her mouth.
The mother and daughter shared an orange, and at that moment, Tang Zhicheng finished tidying up everything.
Ye Fangfei let Xiao Yueying play by herself while she set the table for dinner. "Wash your hands; it's time to eat," she said.
"Did you steam buns today? What filling did you use?" Tang Zhicheng asked, having seen two steaming trays of buns in the kitchen just a moment ago.
"Yes, I made cabbage and pork buns, as well as sauerkraut with oil residue. I steamed a bit extra; I'll take some over to my mom tomorrow," Ye Fangfei replied.
"Alright, also take a few oranges for Ye Ting. And about the things I brought, if they don’t have something, make sure to take a few over for them," Tang Zhicheng suggested.
For the Ye family, Tang Zhicheng was generous. Whether it was something he brought from outside or items distributed by his workplace, he would always encourage Ye Fangfei to send them over to her family.
Of course, the Ye family treated them well in return. Hao Chunying often brought back defective fabric from the factory, and she would give them half of it.
Their family of three had never lacked clothes to wear.
Ye Jianguo and Ye Zijun were the same; whenever their workplace handed out something new, they would always send it over to them.
This made Tang Zhicheng feel deeply grateful.
So, whenever he had something good at home, he would think of sending a little something to his in-laws as well.
"Okay, I understand. Let’s eat first," Ye Fangfei said as she brought out the pickled vegetables.
Ye Fangfei cooked a porridge made of rice mixed with millet and picked out a few buns. She also prepared a bowl of pickled mustard greens.
This was their dinner.
Don’t be fooled by its simplicity; during this era, it was quite good already.
It was only because both Tang Zhicheng and Ye Fangfei worked that they could afford such meals. Tang Zhicheng also had some gray income on the side, which allowed them to eat like this.
For an average family, just filling up on steamed cornbread would have been considered good enough.
At the dinner table, Tang Zhicheng hesitated for a moment before finally speaking up: "Wife, I want to send some brown sugar to my mother. Is that alright?"
Ye Fangfei didn’t expect him to bring this up suddenly. She looked up in surprise and saw Tang Zhicheng gazing at her eagerly.
With a chuckle, Ye Fangfei replied, "Sure! What’s wrong with that? It’s your stuff; you can decide."
Tang Zhicheng noticed that Ye Fangfei's tone was a bit off. Afraid that she might be upset, he cautiously said, "Wife, what do you mean by that? What have I taken? Aren't all my things yours? I was just saying it like that. If you don't want to, then I won't send anything."
"I'm not angry; I'm just a bit confused. Why did you suddenly think of this? We’ve already sent quite a few New Year gifts," Ye Fangfei replied.
"Well, my mother wrote to us, asking why we didn't celebrate the New Year," he explained. "I know there are some things my mother did wrong. I don't blame you for changing your attitude towards them. But they are still my parents; they raised me all these years. Even if I complain about them, they are always on my mind. They are getting older, and I just want to send them more things."
"But I'll listen to you, wife. If you're unhappy about it, I won't send anything."
Ye Fangfei fell silent after hearing this. Tang Zhicheng spoke sincerely, and the situation was indeed as he described. Although Ye Fangfei was disappointed in her hometown people, she certainly wouldn’t do anything unnecessary herself. However, she also wouldn’t stop Tang Zhicheng from honoring his parents. As long as it wasn’t excessive, she would let him handle it.
"I'm not angry; this matter is yours to decide," she said. "You can do as you see fit."
