"Miss, I swear it wasn't me!" Bai Zhi knelt before everyone, pleading. "This hairpin was indeed a gift from the Miss, but I lost it by accident some time ago."
Previously, Bai Zhi had been beaten to death by Gu Yanran for defending Gu Qingning. Now, she would never allow anyone to lay a finger on her again.
"Sell this lowly maid!" Li Ruofeng, wanting to cut ties with Gu Qingning, had been visiting the Buddhist temple every few days to pray for her son's recovery. These lowly servants were plotting against her son; she wished she could tear them apart with her own hands.
The old maids moved forward in haste, attempting to drag Bai Zhi away by force. A flicker of triumph crossed Gu Yanran's eyes for just a moment before she quickly resumed her obedient demeanor beside Old Madam Gu.
If Bai Zhi were gone, Gu Qingning would lose a supporter, and then Gu Yanran could manipulate her as she pleased.
Gu Qingning noticed Gu Yanran's small movements and realized that she had already planned to eliminate those around her at this moment.
"Miss, I truly didn't do anything wrong!" Bai Zhi was at a loss for words.
Gu Yanran looked at Bai Zhi with feigned anger and said, "Bai Zhi has served my elder sister for many years. I didn't want to doubt you, but the evidence is right before our eyes. I never expected you to harbor such malicious intentions and wish to harm my only brother!"
Gu Qingning understood the underlying meaning in Gu Yanran's words; on the surface, it was a reprimand aimed at Bai Zhi, but in reality, it was an accusation directed at her.
Old Madam Gu's expression changed drastically upon hearing this. Gu Yuxuan was her only grandson; if anything were to happen to him, the wealth and power of the Hou residence would fall into the hands of Gu Haotian. She absolutely could not allow such a thing to happen. Furious, she shouted, "Come here! Give these two ungrateful girls thirty lashes each and sell them off!"
Whenever it came to matters that touched upon her true interests, Old Madam Gu would immediately become vigilant, caring little for the truth of the situation. The lives of two servants meant nothing to her; she still needed to maintain her image of benevolence in front of everyone to avoid tarnishing her reputation.
She knew Old Madam Gu too well; if she didn't add some fuel to the fire, this small issue could entangle Gu Changqing when he returned from court, and that would be troublesome.
Suddenly, she glanced at Chun'er. Chun'er stood up and loudly declared, "If I'm going to be sold off, I might as well die!" With that, she thrust the jade flower hairpin into her neck, blood splattering everywhere as she fell lifelessly.
The courtyard erupted into chaos; everyone was stunned. Gu Qingning hadn't anticipated that Gu Yanran had promised Chun'er so much that she would rather die than let herself be dragged down with them. Previously, Chun'er hadn't actually died; Li Ruofeng had rushed in and ordered people to pull the weak girl into the woodshed so that she could scream for help inside.
When Father returned from court and learned the truth, he apologized to the second branch before allowing her out of the woodshed.
Soon after, Old Madam Gu ordered Chun'er's body to be disposed of immediately. Li Ruofeng widened her eyes and pointed at Bai Zhi, shouting, "Someone take this girl away and beat her!"
With Chun'er dead, Bai Zhi had no evidence to prove herself innocent. Gu Qingning couldn't swallow this humiliation; she couldn't bear to watch them take Bai Zhi away—otherwise, Bai Zhi's life would be in grave danger.
"Grandmother, if that's the case, why not report it to the authorities?" Gu Qingning said helplessly.
Old Madam Gu had no intention of involving the authorities; this was precisely their scheme against Gu Qingning—to leave her speechless and unable to voice her grievances. Reporting it would bring no benefits and would only make their noble family a laughingstock for being unable to handle such a trivial matter.
Old Madam slammed her hand on the table and shouted angrily, "You foolish children! No one is allowed to report this!"
"What will Grandmother do then?" Gu Yanran asked softly.
Old Madam glanced at Li Ruofeng. Under her gaze, Li Ruofeng lowered her head.
