"Have you made up your mind?" The long silence was finally broken by Gu Changqing's slightly helpless voice.
He knew that for the past ten days, Qing'er had been tormented inside. She wanted to go up the mountain but was afraid to do so. She couldn't let go of Ning'er and was unwilling to travel thousands of miles in search of a place that might not even exist in anyone's eyes.
His beloved wife, Shi Min, had passed away when Gu Qingning was still young, consumed by worry and sorrow. In her final moments, her greatest concern was for her daughter, Gu Wan Ning, who suffered from an eye ailment. She had tried everything to find renowned doctors for her daughter, spending countless resources, yet none could cure her even a little.
Before she passed away, she heard of a legendary place called the Valley of the Medicine King, where an elderly half-god named Chen was said to possess extraordinary medical skills. If only he could be persuaded to come out of seclusion, there was a good chance that Gu Wan Ning's eye condition could be treated.
But she was already gravely ill, beyond the help of medicine or doctors; it was impossible for her to seek out this legendary healer herself. She could only entrust this matter to her eldest daughter. On her deathbed, she urged Gu Qingning to go up the mountain to learn the arts and ensure that her sister's eye ailment would be cured.
At the moment their mother closed her eyes for the last time, Gu Qingning promised her with all her heart that she would find a way to treat her sister’s condition.
"I promised our mother that I would find a cure for my sister’s eyes." In the past, when she was younger and naive, she had refused to go up the mountain. Now that she had come to understand things better, no matter how difficult it might be, she was determined to find a way to help her sister. Gu Qingning looked at Gu Changqing with unwavering resolve.
"But if you go up the mountain, what will happen to your sister? She will be left alone in the Hou residence; I can't bear that." Gu Wan Ning tightened her grip on Gu Qingning's hand and said anxiously.
"Sister, you don’t need to worry about me going up the mountain. Just let me stay quietly in my courtyard; no one will come to trouble me." The comforting voice of Jiang Wan Ning reached her ears.
She understood that her sister was worried about her, but just thinking about being left alone in the residence made her feel a twinge of fear.
Despite the unspoken dread creeping into her heart, she didn’t want to burden her sister or father or make their elder brother at the border worry about them.
"No," Gu Qingning insisted. "Once I’m up the mountain, I can’t guarantee anything about my apprenticeship. If I do become an apprentice, it could take three to five years before I can return. Father is soon going back to the border again; leaving you alone in the residence makes me extremely uneasy."
Although her sister’s eye condition posed no immediate threat to Gu Yanran at present, any unforeseen changes could turn her into a vulnerability for them all—something they couldn’t afford.
She vowed never to let such a thing happen and aimed to prevent it from occurring right from the start.
"Since we’ve decided on this path, then so be it. As for Ning'er’s situation, I will find a solution." With that thought in mind, Gu Changqing reminded his daughters that tomorrow marked Shi Min's memorial day and suggested they visit Fo Guang Temple together before setting off.
"What Father says is true." Gu Qingning finally realized that amidst everything happening lately, she had almost forgotten about their mother's memorial day. "Tomorrow we will take Ning'er with us to Fo Guang Temple."
"Father," Gu Qingning continued thoughtfully, "let’s take some more time over these next few days to consider Ning'er’s situation." She couldn’t reveal everything weighing on her heart but knew they needed a long-term plan.
"I’m worried about leaving Ning'er alone in the residence; what worries me more is you, Father. The enemies at the border are restless; you might have to set off again soon." Her clear voice rang out once more as they discussed their plans.
