As Gu Qingning took Gu Wanning to the Foguang Temple, Gu Yanran boarded another carriage to accompany them.
Inside the temple, the sisters lit a perpetual lamp for Shi Min and donated incense oil to the monastery. Just half an hour after leaving the temple, while sitting in the carriage, Gu Qingning heard a series of thunderclaps. She opened the carriage curtain and looked up to see dark clouds gathering ominously on the horizon, signaling an impending downpour.
No sooner had she lowered the curtain than heavy rain began to pour down unexpectedly. The sudden rush of rain forced Gu Qingning and Gu Wanning to quickly search for something to hold onto. Gu Wanning, unable to see, reached out her hands to feel around, gripping tightly onto the carriage.
The jolting motion of the carriage caused Gu Qingning to sway from side to side. Ignoring her own instability, she extended a hand in an attempt to grasp Gu Wanning, who instinctively clutched Red Ling beside her in her fear of the unknown.
The carriage was thrown into chaos. A glance outside revealed that the driver was nowhere to be seen. The carriage, now without guidance, careened forward blindly, tilting dangerously to one side. In their panic, the three of them clung tightly to the carriage frame to avoid being thrown off.
As Gu Qingning found herself sliding toward one side of the carriage, she glanced at Gu Wanning's pale face across from her. Quickly releasing her grip on what she was holding, she tried to reach for the reins but found them just out of reach.
"Wanning," Gu Qingning urged herself to stay calm as she exchanged a glance with Red Ling. "Get ready; follow my command."
Gu Wanning and Red Ling nodded frantically.
With her lips pressed tightly together and her face drained of color, Gu Qingning focused on the road ahead and made another attempt to grab the reins. The carriage sped up too much, bouncing violently; she simply couldn't grasp them.
After biting her lip as if making a monumental decision, she shouted loudly, "Jump!"
The three of them leaped in unison in the direction of the carriage's tilt, landing in a muddy patch below—disheveled and drenched.
Ah! In the chaos of the carriage and blinded by rain, Gu Qingning hadn’t had time to see where she was landing; she didn’t realize that she had fallen near a cliff’s edge.
As soon as she felt herself teetering at the cliff’s brink, she quickly pushed Gu Wanning forward. With no way to steady herself, she rolled down into the abyss.
Panicking, Gu Wanning heard her sister's voice call out and forgot about her drenched clothes as she screamed for her sister and Red Ling.
Unable to see clearly, she hesitated to move too much and extended her hands frantically around her body in search of something familiar.
Red Ling had landed with her head against a rock and was knocked unconscious; she didn’t hear Gu Wanning’s cries.
As Gu Qingning fell down the cliff, her scream filled Gu Wanning with despair. "Sister! Sister! Where are you?"
"Wanning! Listen to me! Stay there and don’t move!" In her frantic descent down the cliffside, Gu Qingning managed to grab hold of a vine. Rainwater splashed against her face as pain shot through her body; in this life-and-death moment, she gasped for air.
Taking a deep breath, she slowly lowered her head and looked down at her feet dangling in mid-air. The sight nearly caused her acrophobia to overwhelm her.
Amidst her fear and panic, she couldn’t help but feel grateful that only Wanning and Red Ling were with her.
She had just been born and hadn’t even had the chance to secure her own life when she almost found herself reporting to the King of Hell.
The rain poured down heavily, and the sky had already darkened. She tried to climb up slowly using the vines, but as soon as she moved, the vines trembled and slipped downwards.
Hanging motionless in mid-air against the sheer cliff, Gu Qingning felt a deep sense of despair. All she could do was pray that Hong Ling, that little girl, would notice her at the bottom of the cliff and find a way to rescue her.
At that moment, Hong Ling, who had fainted not far from Gu Wan Ning, was completely unaware of what was happening.
A dull and rhythmic sound of hooves echoed in the distance, interrupting Gu Wan Ning's cries amidst the rain.
With her keen hearing, Gu Wan Ning recognized the sound of horses' hooves and felt a surge of joy in her heart. Ignoring her hoarse throat, she shouted loudly, "Help! Help!"
Hearing Gu Wan Ning's desperate cries for help, Gu Qingning also grasped the vines and joined in shouting, "Help! Help!" As soon as she opened her mouth, muddy rainwater poured in, sliding down her throat and chilling her body.
"Master, there are cries for help ahead."
