Cough, cough, cough. Although Gu Wan Ning could not see, her hearing was extraordinary, and she caught the sound of coughing coming from not far away.
She quickly called out loudly, "Brave warrior, I am Gu Wan Ning, the third young lady of the Zhongyuan Marquisate. I have unfortunately fallen into misfortune here. Please, brave warrior, can you save us? My father, the Marquis of Zhongyuan, will surely reward you."
Feng Ren was surprised and said, "Master, it's someone from the Zhongyuan Marquisate."
"Who?"
"The third young lady, Gu Wan Ning."
The coughing from inside the carriage stopped for a moment, and then a voice responded.
"Yes." Feng Ren took a few steps forward and leaped gracefully, turning to land right in front of Gu Wan Ning. As she felt him approach, her tense body relaxed slightly. She pleaded with him, "Brave warrior, I cannot see. Can you help my sister and see where she is?"
At that moment, Gu Wan Ning was filled with anxiety as she couldn't hear her sister's voice. Overwhelmed with various worries and fears, she reached out and grabbed Feng Ren's clothing corner once more to plead.
Gu Qing Ning's hands were burning with pain. After calling out a few times while hanging in mid-air with her eyes closed, she dared not make a sound for fear of becoming dizzy and falling.
Feng Ren looked around but did not see Gu Qing Ning. He walked over to the edge of the cliff and peered down; indeed, he spotted a young lady hanging onto the rocky vines of the steep cliff.
"Master, it’s the two young ladies from the Zhongyuan Marquisate," Feng Ren reported back to those inside the carriage.
"Two young ladies? Who?"
"Gu Wan Ning's sister is hanging on the cliff."
"Bring her up."
After receiving his master's consent, Feng Ren leaped down in one swift motion like a bolt of lightning. With one hand, he grasped Gu Qing Ning's arm and pulled her upwards. Startled by his sudden movement, Gu Qing Ning clutched at his clothing tightly.
Feng Ren’s lightness was remarkable; he moved like a swift swallow. In a twirl and a flash, he landed safely on solid ground. Once she felt the firm ground beneath her feet, Gu Qing Ning's pale face finally relaxed as she realized she had been saved. She took a slow deep breath and raised her head to search for her sister Gu Wan Ning.
Seeing her sister sitting dazedly in the pouring rain not far away, Gu Qing Ning disregarded her own pain and struggled to limp over to her side.
"Sister." Gu Wan Ning reached out uncertainly and asked, "Is it you?"
"Wan Ning, are you alright?" Grasping Gu Wan Ning's hand tightly, Gu Qing Ning examined her from head to toe in panic. Once she confirmed that her sister only had torn clothing and was otherwise unharmed, she finally felt relieved.
Supporting Gu Wan Ning to stand up, Gu Qing Ning turned slightly toward the people inside the carriage and bowed slightly. "Thank you for saving us."
"Hero?"
From behind a silk-draped window adorned with white jade trim emerged a long and elegantly defined hand that looked crystal clear and beautiful.
Gu Qingning was shocked when she saw the long eyebrows and eyes, the straight nose, and the man draped in a deep blue cloak as the carriage door curtain was lifted.
It turned out to be him.
Pei Zhiqing.
Pei Zhirui was the ninth son of Emperor Jing, and Pei Zhiqing was his ninth brother. Since he was in his mother’s womb, he had suffered from a chronic illness, and the imperial physician had predicted that he would not live past nineteen.
He was the son of the late Consort Chén, the emperor's most beloved consort, and he enjoyed considerable favor from Emperor Jing. With the legitimate eldest son having passed away, he was the best candidate for Crown Prince and Pei Zhirui's strongest rival for the throne.
A thought flashed through Gu Qingning's mind.
