Li Momo followed behind Li Ruofeng, her expression one of hesitation. Suddenly, she recalled the time when the old matriarch had fallen seriously ill, and how she had sought medicine from the Madam.
Before her passing, the key to the medicine room had been given to the eldest daughter. “Do you remember how shortly after the Madam passed away, the old matriarch often went to Qiushui Courtyard to check on the eldest daughter because she felt sorry for her losing her mother at such a young age?” Li Momo continued when she saw confusion on Li Ruofeng's face. “Not long after that, when the Marquis returned from the border, the old matriarch rarely visited Qiushui Courtyard anymore. At that time, everyone thought it was out of concern for her granddaughter. But upon reflection, perhaps there were reasons that outsiders would find hard to understand.”
“The old matriarch is not Gu Qingning's biological grandmother; I don't believe she genuinely cares for her granddaughter,” Li Ruofeng scoffed.

The old matriarch was not Gu Changqing's biological grandmother; after Gu Changqing's mother passed away, under everyone's persuasion, the old marquis married the old matriarch as his second wife and they had Gu Siyuan together.
After marrying her, the old marquis did not let Gu Changqing be raised by the old matriarch but kept him by his side for personal guidance. Before his departure, he personally passed down his marquis title to his legitimate eldest son Gu Changqing while Gu Siyuan had to rely on his own efforts to climb up to become an Assistant Minister of Rites.
