At the entrance of the palace, Gu Siyuan listened as the servants recounted the situation. He hurried back inside and made his way to the Imperial Medical Institute, requesting that Doctor Du accompany him to the residence of Marquis Zhongyuan. Doctor Du, carrying his medicine box, followed him into the same carriage as they set off for Chunhe Hall.
Due to Li Ruofeng's insistence, everyone—including the Gu sisters, the second house's concubine Wen, and their daughter Gu Le'er—had to remain in Chunhe Hall and wait.
"Old Madam, Doctor Du has arrived," a person rushed in to report.
Upon hearing that the doctor had come, Old Madam Gu turned and instructed Liang Momo, who was waiting beside her, "Bring me my glass flower wooden box."
Liang Momo glanced at the old lady. After receiving a nod from her, she turned to leave. In that moment, she cast another glance at Gu Qingning before quickly entering the inner chamber.
"Greetings, Old Madam," Doctor Du said as he entered. "I truly had no choice but to trouble you with this special trip."
Old Madam Gu held great respect for Doctor Du, the head of the Imperial Medical Institute.
Liang Momo emerged from the inner room holding the box and stood beside Old Madam Gu. The old lady nodded at her, and Liang Momo stopped in front of Doctor Du, opening the box to reveal the pills inside. The black pills looked just like ordinary medicine, showing no signs of difference.
As soon as the box was opened, a strong medicinal aroma began to waft through the air, reaching Gu Qingning's nose. It was a familiar scent she hadn't encountered in a long time, causing her to involuntarily stand up.
She leaned forward to take a closer look; the black pills appeared no different from regular ones. Yet she knew that this was the very pill that the old lady had tricked her into giving up.
The old lady had instructed Liang Momo to use a substitute without realizing that Liang Momo would actually bring out the real one.
Everyone watched as Gu Qingning moved closer; they couldn't help but step forward for a better look but were quickly deterred by the old lady's fierce glare.
Li Ruofeng anxiously observed Doctor Du, not wanting to miss any detail, as if that pill were her son's last hope for survival.
Doctor Du carefully picked it up and examined it closely before bringing it to his nose to sniff. After a moment, a look of joy flickered across his face.
"How is it?" Li Ruofeng broke the silence, her fists clenched tightly and beads of sweat forming on her back from nervousness.
Doctor Du slowly placed it back into the box and replied, "Good medicine."
Liang Momo closed the lid and returned to stand beside Old Madam Gu.
"Please, save Xuan'er quickly!" Li Ruofeng exclaimed with overwhelming joy.
"This medicine is indeed good; it has the effect of delaying asthma, but it cannot cure the young master," Doctor Du said with difficulty.
"Even a delay is better than nothing. Doctor Du, you are the head of the Imperial Medical Institute, and I trust your medical skills," Li Ruofeng pleaded, his hope dwindling. "Even if it can allow my son to live for another three to five years, I beg you."
Doctor Du was at a loss for words.
"Is there any other difficulty you face?" Hearing Doctor Du's assertion, Old Lady Gu felt that this medicine was not as miraculous as what Shen Min had claimed initially. Perhaps it would be better to let it go and seek a good reputation for herself instead.
