The Jing Wang Manor
Pei Zhi Jing was favored by Emperor Jing, receiving the grace of an early bestowal to establish his own manor, and was granted the title of Jing.
As Gu Qing Ning entered the Jing Wang Manor, she was led by a servant into the inner courtyard. Having visited the manor in her previous life, Gu Qing Ning looked around as she walked. The expansive manor was sparsely decorated, much like its owner—cold and desolate.
"Your Highness, Miss Gu has arrived," the servant reported respectfully after leading Gu Qing Ning in a circle and presenting her before Pei Zhi Jing.
"Leave us," he commanded, waving his hand to dismiss the servant.
Gu Qing Ning stood on her tiptoes as Pei Zhi Jing stepped into the pavilion, taking a seat on a stone bench beside her.
"Extend your hand," she said as soon as she sat down. As a healer, she possessed an innate compassion.
Pei Zhi Jing smiled slightly and obediently extended his hand toward Gu Qing Ning.
After taking his pulse, Gu Qing Ning thoughtfully tucked his hand back into his robe sleeve.
In such close proximity, she furrowed her brows tightly; her serious expression reflected in his indifferent eyes stirred something within him that had long been dormant.
"The condition is temporarily stable. You must pay attention to rest and warmth, and take your medicine as prescribed. This will ensure Your Highness lives for three more years." Gu Qing Ning sighed with relief internally and reiterated her advice.
Sitting beside her, Pei Zhi Jing poured a cup of tea and placed it in front of her.
"I didn't expect your medical skills to be so remarkable. It seems His Highness has indeed found a treasure," he remarked, surprised at her abilities. Initially, he had saved her and her sister purely out of respect for Consort Qi.
The imperial physician had once predicted he wouldn't live past the year, yet here he was now, with Gu Qing Ning audaciously claiming she could extend his life by three years.
"Your Highness is my future husband; I am destined to be your consort. Naturally, I want you to live," Gu Qing Ning replied calmly, taking a sip of tea and murmuring softly, "I certainly don’t want to be a widow."
Pei Zhi Jing nearly spat out his tea upon hearing this; the eldest daughter of the Gu family had quite the character.
After a moment of contemplation, Pei Zhi Jing spoke again: "Due to Your Highness's recent ill health, the Bureau of Astronomy has recalculated the dates and moved the wedding up to May 10th next month."
"That's excellent," Gu Qing Ning thought eagerly; she wished for the wedding to be hastened to avoid any potential troubles.
"If you have any requests, feel free to bring them up. Your Highness will certainly help you fulfill them," he said earnestly.
Gu Qingning could tell that Pei Zhiqing had summoned her today for a purpose. Since His Highness was so straightforward, she decided to speak frankly as well. Looking at him, she said, "After we marry, I will help you treat your chronic illness; in return, you will protect my family. That is the first condition."
She glanced at Pei Zhiqing's face and continued, "Secondly, once the first condition is fulfilled, I want to leave the estate and go to Yaowang Valley to seek a master and learn the art of medicine."
"Yaowang Valley? Seek a master and learn?" Pei Zhiqing asked, puzzled by her request.
Seeing his confusion, Gu Qingning explained, "Whether it's your chronic illness or the ailment affecting my sister's eyes, I urgently need to find Yaowang Valley and seek out the renowned healer, Elder Chen. He is said to be the only one capable of helping us."
"Have you heard of this person?" she asked. "He has been bedridden for a long time; I've heard stories about him."
"I only know what my mother told me," Gu Qingning replied with a furrowed brow. "Before she passed away, she instructed me to go up the mountain to seek him but did not provide any specific directions."
