Hong Ling, fearing that Miss would agree to the Second Madam's request, shouted out in agitation. Behind Gu Qingning stood Jin Sha, her expression cold as ice. Hong Ling winked at her, grateful that the young lady had found her a capable assistant.
Qingning had arrived. Li Ruofeng quickly stood up, smiling warmly. Gu Qingning approached and nodded before sitting down beside Gu Wanqing.
"Why has Second Aunt come to see Wanqing today? Is Brother Xuan feeling better?" Gu Qingning asked with concern.
Li Ruofeng, with a fawning smile, replied, "Isn't it because Brother Xuan's illness has temporarily eased? I thought I would come to check on Wanqing."
"Second Aunt should stay by Brother Xuan's side to take care of him. The servants are not very capable; it would be troublesome if they fail to attend to him properly," Hong Ling remarked with a slight smile at the corner of her mouth.
With the young lady stepping in, the Second Madam would surely not succeed. Li Ruofeng stood there hesitantly, wanting to say something but holding back.
"Is there anything else?" Gu Qingning turned to look at Li Ruofeng, who remained rooted in place, and asked.
Li Ruofeng reluctantly said, "Qingning, could you lend Second Aunt some silver for emergencies?"
How could the wife of a prominent official like the Gu family need to borrow silver? If others found out, wouldn't it be a laughingstock? Gu Qingning replied with a smile.
Li Ruofeng felt like she could bite through her back teeth; Gu Qingning's tongue was becoming sharper by the day. "You know that Brother Xuan has been on medication for years. Your uncle's salary is not high, and my grandmother manages the household. How could I possibly have extra silver?" Li Ruofeng lamented.
She had not wanted to come before the Gu sisters and be disliked, but with her purse so light, she had no choice but to lower her head and ask for silver.
After a long silence, Gu Qingning finally spoke up. "How about this? I can lend Second Aunt two hundred and fifty taels from the clothing I’m making for emergencies."
Since Li Ruofeng was so shameless, there was no need for her to show any courtesy. If it weren't for Jin Sha's warning, the two thousand taels in Wanqing's possession would have gone down the drain just like that.
"But Wanqing just said she could lend two thousand taels," Li Ruofeng murmured.
Gu Wanqing suddenly felt a bit embarrassed and softly said, "Sister..."
"Wanqing, those two thousand taels are for your medicine; how can you take them out to lend to Second Aunt?" Gu Qingning tightened her grip on Gu Wanqing's hand, signaling her to remain silent.
Gu Wanqing looked confused but kept quiet as her sister had instructed.
As soon as the words were spoken, Li Ruofeng quickly interjected, "Wan Ning, lend it to Second Aunt first; she will return it to you in a few days."
Today was the day of the Ning County banquet, and she needed money to present herself properly. Two hundred and fifty taels were hardly enough to buy a single piece of jewelry; Gu Qingning was treating her like a beggar. The thought alone infuriated her, and she decided to take matters into her own hands with Gu Wan Ning.
Gu Wan Ning, being blind, was easier to persuade. Gu Qingning smiled and said to Li Ruofeng, "Second Aunt, if you find two hundred and fifty taels insufficient, then please take it back."
With that, Gu Qingning turned her head and nodded at the maid beside her, Lu Yan. Lu Yan promptly handed a bag of silver coins to Li Ruofeng.
Fuming with anger, her face turning a deep shade of purple, Li Ruofeng snatched the bag from Lu Yan's hands and stormed off.
