The Tenth Prince sneered, casting a disdainful glance at Gu Qingning.
Gu Qingning did not respond to the Tenth Prince but instead glanced at Ning Jun. From the moment she entered, a faint layer of anxiety had settled on Ning Jun's face, which she struggled to suppress without letting it show.
Gu Qingning recalled that on this day in her previous life, she was about to marry Pei Zhirui. Her heart and mind were filled with preparations for her wedding, and she had instructed the steward to send a generous gift to the Duke of Qi's residence. Therefore, she was unaware of what had transpired today that left the Eldest Prince bedridden.
Ning Jun glanced at the silent Gu Qingning and smiled as she spoke, "Today is my birthday, and I have prepared some small performances for everyone to enjoy."
As soon as she finished speaking, a maid hurried in and whispered something in Ning Jun's ear.
Ning Jun immediately stood up and left.
Seeing that Ning Jun had departed, the guests began to pair off and move towards the front to join in the festivities. Gu Qingning and Zhang Yiwen also followed suit.
The Tenth Prince glared fiercely at Gu Qingning's retreating figure, his eyes seemingly filled with venom.
Once everyone had left, Gu Yanzhi rose and brushed past the Tenth Prince. Just as she was about to step out the door, the Tenth Prince ordered a maid to stop her.
"Hold on," he said.
Gu Yanzhi remained composed. "Are you Gu Yanzhi, Gu Qingning's cousin?"
"Yes."
Gu Yanzhi was uncertain about what this arrogant prince intended.
"Before long, you will be marrying my second brother and becoming his secondary consort," the Tenth Prince said mockingly as he stood tall before her.
Gu Yanzhi remained silent, curious about what this prince was up to.
"I do not like Gu Qingning, nor do I have any fondness for her sisters. A mere minister's daughter thinks she can marry my second brother?" The Tenth Prince stepped closer to Gu Yanzhi, gritting his teeth as he declared, "Dream on!"
Being born of the same mother as Pei Zhirui, the Tenth Prince naturally felt a sense of superiority. In his mind, no woman was worthy of his second brother, let alone just a minister's daughter; how could she possibly marry him? Not even as a secondary consort!
"The marriage between a minister’s daughter and the Second Prince is a gift from His Majesty; it is a blessing for me." Gu Yanzhi intended to test him but quickly realized that the Tenth Prince was indeed looking for trouble.
"Hmph." The Tenth Prince cast another disdainful glance at Gu Yanzhi, lifted his chin proudly, and strode out of the flower hall.
"Walk slowly, Your Grace."
Gu Yan respectfully bowed slightly. If it weren't for the fact that she was Pei Zhirui's biological sister, Gu Yan would not let her off so easily.
The noble lady was venting her frustrations on the maid. Xianglan felt it was unfair for the lady to take her anger out on her.
Gu Yan had left earlier than Gu Qingning and had already arrived at the Duke of Qi's residence. She was unaware of everything that had just transpired at the Treasure Pavilion.
"Gu Qingning, you deserve to die!"
If it weren't for the incident at the Foguang Temple last time and the Second Prince's repeated warnings not to act rashly, she wouldn't be feeling so stifled now.
In the Zhongyuan Marquisate, Gu Qingning had suppressed her at every turn, and now at the Duke of Qi's residence, she still had to bear the burden of her sister's actions, allowing the nobleman to vent his anger on her. Gu Yan would remember this grudge well; one day, she would make those people kneel before her and beg for mercy.
