Flushed with embarrassment, Gu Qingning forced herself to stand calmly before following Princess Pingning out the door. After taking a few steps, she noticed that Pei Zhiqing had not followed. Turning around, she found him staring at the threshold with a troubled expression.
Earlier, when Gu Qingning entered, she had noticed that Pei Zhiqing was alone, with even his Wind Blade dispatched elsewhere. Watching Princess Pingning's figure grow more distant, Gu Qingning gritted her teeth and pushed Pei Zhiqing's wheelchair forward.
At that moment, Gu Qingning was unaware that Pei Zhirui, who was supposed to be heading to Yuehua Pavilion to drink and have fun with the young masters, had already been drugged and taken to Gu Yan's room.
"Once we are married, I will definitely help you stand up," Gu Qingning said absentmindedly as she looked down at the contrasting figures on the ground. "It’s too inconvenient for you like this."
Pei Zhiqing responded with a barely audible "mm."
Silence fell again.
In the eyes of everyone, the Ninth Prince of Dayan, Pei Zhiqing, was merely a frail individual with no threat. No matter where he went in his wheelchair, even when he could occasionally stand up, he was always met with disdain, sympathy, or pity from those around him. As a result, he rarely ventured outside.
Yet he was the Ninth Prince of Dayan, with grand aspirations and a heart devoted to protecting the country and its people. He wanted to contribute his strength for the world. Otherwise, he would not have resolutely dragged his broken body to the front lines as a strategist when he learned that Pei Zhirui had ascended to the throne.
Someone like him should not be confined to a small wheelchair for a lifetime without achieving anything.
Gu Qingning lowered her gaze, feeling a deep sense of guilt welling up within her.
"Mother, Zhiqing and Sister Qingning have arrived," Princess Pingning announced as she stepped into the courtyard and approached the bedridden Grand Princess.
"Qingqing, help me sit up," the Grand Princess said weakly as she gestured for her daughter to come closer.
Pushing Pei Zhiqing inside, Gu Qingning bowed respectfully to the Grand Princess. "Greetings, Your Highness."
"I’m glad you’re here," the Grand Princess beckoned Gu Qingning forward.
"My aunt has been bedridden for over a year. I brought you here hoping you could take a look at her," Pei Zhiqing explained as he glanced at Gu Qingning.
Upon taking a closer look, Gu Qingning realized that the Grand Princess was not simply ill but had fallen victim to the poison known as Red Beauty's Withering Bone.
This poison acted slowly; it caused one’s appearance to age over time until they resembled a skeleton. Eventually, it would feel like countless ants were gnawing at one’s insides—burning and tormenting until death ensued.
Gu Qingning stepped forward to check her pulse. Her expression shifted between frowning and pondering deeply.
Princess Pingning stared at Gu Qingning in surprise.
"The Grand Princess's poison can be cured," Gu Qingning continued. "However, I currently lack one essential item."
As soon as she finished speaking, hope flickered in Princess Pingning's eyes as she eagerly asked, "Whatever it is that can save my mother, I will find it."
"The Colorful Blood Pearl."
Gu Qingning softly uttered three words.
The Princess of Chang remained silent.
"What is this? I've never heard of it," the Princess Pingning asked in confusion.
Gu Qingning said nothing, and both the Princess of Chang and Pei Zhijing fell silent as well. They knew who possessed the Colorful Blood Pearl, but that person, having poisoned her, would certainly not reveal it.
"Miao Miao, Mother can't be cured."
It wasn't that she didn't want to heal; upon learning that it was that person who had poisoned her but had not killed her, she realized her days were numbered. That person wanted her dead—how could they possibly bring out the Colorful Blood Pearl to save her?
"Sister Qingning, I beg you." The Princess Pingning approached Gu Qingning and knelt down in desperation.
Since Zhijing believed in her, she could only place all her hopes on Gu Qingning.
"Is there no other way?"
Those afflicted by the Red Beauty withered typically had only three to five years left to live. The Princess of Chang had been poisoned for over a year now, and the chances of detoxification were down to half. After pondering for a moment, Gu Qingning continued, "If we can't find the Colorful Blood Pearl, there's only one last method left."
