Pei Zhiqing lowered his head, gazing at the playful yet dignified woman before him. An indescribable emotion suddenly filled and enveloped his heart. His tightly pressed lips and the slight curve of a smile at the corners of his mouth revealed a hint of his barely perceptible feelings.
Resting on his elbows, Pei Zhiqing's gaze was fixed on the woman in front of him, as if time itself had come to a standstill.
At the horizon, the last sliver of dusk slowly vanished behind scattered clouds, gradually losing its shadow. A gentle breeze swept through the courtyard, causing fallen leaves on the branches to drift down, settling into every corner of the blue stone pavement.
The sleeping woman furrowed her brow tightly, cold sweat beading on her forehead as she murmured "no" repeatedly in her sleep.
Hearing this, Pei Zhiqing frowned and lifted his head, the color in his eyes deepening. He reached out, wanting to smooth the woman's tightly knitted brows.
"Green smoke, run!"
Gu Qingning awoke with a start, sitting up abruptly. Confusion washed over her as she took in her unfamiliar surroundings, only to hear the rapid thumping of her heart echoing in her chest.
Cautiously scanning her surroundings, her gaze finally landed on the man beside her, and the fear on her face gradually dissipated.
So cold!
A chill seeped into Gu Qingning's limbs and bones. In a panic, she reached out and wrapped her arms around the man's waist, burying herself in his embrace, greedily absorbing the warmth that enveloped her.
It felt like a nightmare; it seemed as if all her family, children, and friends had perished in that cold winter.
They were all gone—dead. The piercing cold that penetrated to her core dragged her deeper into an abyss from which she could not escape.
The sudden embrace caused the man to stiffen momentarily. After a brief pause, he carefully wrapped his arms around her as if she were a precious treasure. He gently rested his forehead against her dark hair, his deep-set eyes filled with an almost imperceptible tenderness mixed with a hint of sharpness.
Warm breath brushed over her head as the strong and rhythmic heartbeat resonated through their clothes. In that moment, Gu Qingning felt a long-lost sense of peace wash over her; the chilling fear that had enveloped her heart began to dissipate.
Raising her tear-glossed eyes to meet the noble and elegant man before her, she shifted uncomfortably.
"You had a nightmare," Pei Zhiqing said softly, breaking the strange atmosphere that hung between them.
As soon as he spoke, Gu Qingning quickly pulled away from his embrace. Her delicate face flushed with a faint crimson hue as she feigned calmness while standing up. Her unsteady steps betrayed the turmoil within her.
"I need to see Princess Chang."
As she abruptly left his arms, a fleeting sense of loss washed over Pei Zhiqing. Watching her stumble away with a graceful yet flustered demeanor brought a subtle smile to his lips.
In a panic, Gu Qingning slammed the door shut behind her and leaned against it, taking deep breaths. The pounding of her heart incessantly reminded her just how alluring this man was to her!
Pei Zhiqing's personal delivery of two hundred eighty bridal gifts stirred up waves of gossip in the second household.
Furious, Gu Yan swept all the blue-and-white porcelain cups off the table onto the floor. "That wretched woman! Just because she's marrying into royalty—why should she be the primary consort while I am merely a side consort?"
Why does she get to marry a short-lived ghost and live so freely? Why?
What right does the daughter of a merchant have to live better than I do?
A short-lived ghost and a lowly merchant's daughter, both are worthless!
Gu Yan once thought that as long as she took her time and planned carefully, everything she desired would come to her.
