As the morning light gently rose on the horizon, it resembled fine shards of silver sand filtering through the gaps in the branches, casting a mottled glow upon the window frame and spreading throughout every corner of the room.
On the bed, Pei Zhiqing quietly awakened, lying still as he gazed at the woman sleeping in his arms, his cold yet noble eyes filled with tenderness.
The woman, who had dreamt sweetly through the night, fluttered her long eyelashes like butterfly wings and slowly stirred awake. The first sight that met her eyes was Pei Zhiqing's affectionate gaze.
In a daze, Gu Qingning suddenly pulled the blanket up over her head, trying to hide her inner turmoil.
Seeing this, Pei Zhiqing smiled and gently tugged at a corner of the blanket, saying, "Don't suffocate yourself; be careful not to make it worse."
Gu Qingning stammered incoherently, her voice barely above a whisper, as her cheeks flushed a deep red. She resembled a soft little bunny nestled under the covers, too shy to emerge.
Worried that Gu Qingning might feel uncomfortable, Pei Zhiqing refrained from calling anyone to attend to them and got up from the bed to change behind the screen himself.
Feeling the emptiness beside her on the bed, Gu Qingning summoned her courage and peeked out from under the blanket with watery eyes. She dared not look directly at Pei Zhiqing and could only steal a glance.
Sitting on the edge of the bed, she stared at Pei Zhiqing, who was dressed in dark attire, utterly captivated. The man was far more handsome than she had imagined.
At that moment, Bai Zhi and Lu Yan knocked on the door and entered to help Gu Qingning get ready for the day.
After sharing breakfast with Pei Zhiqing, they headed to the palace to pay their respects to Emperor Jing.
In the hall, at a round table, Emperor Jing looked at the couple before him with delight and exclaimed three times how wonderful they were.
"I was worried about your health," he said. "But now that I see you looking well, it seems that joy brings vitality. Had I known this would be the case, I should have let you marry sooner."
Upon hearing this, Gu Qingning shyly lowered her head.
Pei Zhiqing responded to Emperor Jing's remarks but quietly served Gu Qingning some food.
Gu Qingning shot him a glare; with Emperor Jing present, she felt embarrassed to speak up and could only grumble silently in her heart.
This man had been acting strangely since last night! After an entire night that nearly left her feeling broken, he showed no signs of fatigue—how unfair!
The Emperor Jing looked at the two children before him, feeling their unease, and decided not to keep them in the palace any longer. After bestowing them with a generous array of gifts, he allowed them to leave.
In the carriage, the atmosphere was somewhat heavy.
"What are you thinking about?" Pei Zhiqing asked, breaking the silence as he observed Gu Qingning's quiet demeanor.
Gu Qingning lifted her gaze to meet his eyes and replied, "I told you that after we marry, I want to go to Yaowang Valley. Once we return home, this matter will need to be prioritized."
Her medical skills were still lacking, and it was imperative for her to find a mentor and learn. Everything else could wait in her eyes.
"Yes, I remember," Pei Zhiqing acknowledged. He had indeed heard about Yaowang Valley from her and had sent someone ahead to secretly search for its entrance. However, no concrete news had come back yet; it might take some more time.
"Just wait a little longer," he added.
"I can wait, but Ning'er’s eyes cannot," Gu Qingning thought to herself, hesitant to share her inner turmoil with Pei Zhiqing. Gu Wanqing was the perfect excuse for her concerns. She wondered if her rebirth had altered the original course of events. It seemed that everything was happening sooner than expected.
Now, she felt a growing sense of anxiety within her. The outbreak of plague at the border, the Emperor's poisoning, and the provocations from Ling Kingdom—all these issues were on the verge of erupting.
Pei Zhiqing remained unaware of Gu Qingning's thoughts. He could only see her worry for Gu Wanqing and felt a pang of jealousy stir within him.
"I’ve already sent someone to find the exact location; they haven't found it yet," he said, deciding it was time to stop hiding things from her.
