Gu Qingning propped her chin up, silently gazing at the man lying on the bed, lost in thought.
In his slumber, Pei Zhiqing dreamt of a woman who smiled gently at him, calling out, "Qing'er, Qing'er." His brow furrowed, fingers clenched into fists, and his body trembled.
"Pei Zhiqing, wake up." Gu Qingning did not want him to remain trapped in a nightmare. She called out softly, trying to rouse the man from his troubled dreams.
Pei Zhiqing, tense and rigid, gradually awakened to Gu Qingning's gentle voice.
Opening his eyes, he saw the worried expression on the woman's face at the edge of the bed, and he felt a stir of emotion.
"Qing'er," he blurted out.
"I'm here," Gu Qingning quickly replied.
It took her a moment to realize that when Pei Zhiqing had called out "Qing'er," he was referring to her.
Without denying it, Pei Zhiqing sat up and pulled Gu Qingning into his embrace as if he wanted to meld her into his very being.
"The Consort is dead. They won’t spare even me; they poisoned me."
He hated them, wishing he could carve them into pieces a thousand times over, yet that would not quell the hatred in his heart.
Gu Qingning gently wrapped her arms around him, wanting to share her warmth with Pei Zhiqing.
"It's okay; I'm here," she said softly.
Now she was certain that Pei Zhiqing had long harbored feelings for her. The affectionate nickname he had let slip during his emotional turmoil was the best proof of that.
Gu Qingning did not wish to uncover how many untold secrets Pei Zhiqing kept hidden within him; all she needed was for this man to treat her sincerely.
After a moment, Pei Zhiqing released Gu Qingning. A faint blush colored her cheeks, and there was a hint of tenderness in his gaze.
Pei Zhiqing let go of Gu Qingning, his eyes now sharp and clear.
"I'll give you acupuncture again in a couple of days. Follow my medical advice and take your medicine; we can eliminate the poison from your body in no time."
Gu Qingning bit her lip and spoke up.
She was absolutely certain that when Pei Zhiqing had called out "Qing'er," he was indeed referring to her.
A warm feeling rose in Gu Qingning's heart as she glanced at the slightly pale-faced Pei Zhiqing, finally making up her mind.
"Yes, I believe you."
Somehow, the two had begun to address each other as "you" and "I," unknowingly drawing closer together. Pei Zhiqing, who had initially felt distant to Gu Qingning, seemed to be guiding her step by step into a path he had already designed.
