Upon learning that Gu Qingning would be visiting the next day, Pei Zhirui reluctantly agreed to accompany Gu Yanran. Although Emperor Jing had officially conferred the title of King Jing on Pei Zhiqing, it did not ease Pei Zhirui's concerns. Pei Zhiqing had never been one to willingly hide in the shadows.
"Having been together for so long, this prince should pay a visit to his in-laws. Don’t you think so, Yanran?" Pei Zhirui's gaze flickered with a hint of calculation.
He had heard that Pei Zhiqing fainted upon returning to the Wang residence the day after his wedding. This time, he intended to verify whether Pei Zhiqing's health was indeed as irreparable as Consort An claimed. The information from his spies was not something the suspicious Pei Zhirui would take at face value.
"When the time comes, find an opportunity to separate them. I want to see how Ninth Brother handles himself," he said, his eyes darkening as he recalled the incident at Baizheng Tower, further solidifying his suspicions.
Baizheng Tower was ostensibly owned by someone else, but the true mastermind behind it was Pei Zhirui. Aside from Gu Yanran, no one else knew this secret. Unless someone was aware that Baizheng Tower belonged to him and deliberately employed a strategy to draw away his guards, leaving him alone at the Duke of Qi’s residence.
The only person capable of such a maneuver, other than Pei Zhiqing, was beyond Pei Zhirui's imagination.
"Rest assured, Your Highness, I will handle it," Gu Yanran declared firmly. Recently, she had faced repeated setbacks at the hands of Gu Qingning and had lost considerable face; this time she was determined to extract some interest from her.
"Do not be careless! Both of them are formidable opponents. I suspect that last time’s incident at Baizheng Tower was orchestrated by them against us," Pei Zhirui remarked without mentioning the Duke of Qi’s residence, which Gu Yanran understood well enough.
The Duke of Qi’s residence was their disgrace—a merchant's daughter and a critically ill prince were hardly worth mentioning before His Highness.
Gu Yanran flattered Pei Zhirui dismissively.
Pei Zhirui frowned slightly. "Do not underestimate them. The last incident at Baizheng Tower brought shame upon our Duke of Qi’s residence."
Gu Yanran immediately echoed him: "Your Highness is right; they do have some skills. But this time, I will ensure they regret it."
"Well, for this banquet, you must find a way to get Gu Qingning and Pei Zhijing to come. I want to see how Ninth Brother handles himself," Pei Zhirui said, a calculating glint in his eyes.
"Rest assured, Your Highness, I will find a way," Gu Yanran replied, a fierce determination flashing in her eyes. "This time, I will make sure Gu Qingning embarrasses herself at the banquet."
"Be careful not to let them catch on," Pei Zhirui warned.
"I understand," Gu Yanran nodded. "Your Highness, there is one more thing I’m not sure whether to mention."
"What is it?" Pei Zhirui asked.
"I feel that the relationship between Gu Qingning and Pei Zhijing is rather intricate. Could it be that they are deliberately putting on an act in front of us?" Gu Yanran said cautiously.
Pei Zhirui furrowed his brow. "What do you mean?"
"I think they might be trying to confuse us, making us let our guard down," Gu Yanran analyzed. "They could have already made a secret deal, which is why they are performing for us."
The thought of how after their visit to the Buddhist temple, the Gu family received two imperial marriage decrees the very next day struck her as odd.
What troubled her even more was that Gu Qingning seemed harder to deceive than before.
Otherwise, she wouldn’t be feeling so anxious while enduring humiliation by marrying into the Second Prince's residence.
"Hmph! Regardless of whether they are acting or not, this time at the banquet, I will make sure they pay for it," Pei Zhirui's eyes burned with fury. "I want to see if Ninth Brother truly is as close to death as they claim."
"Rest assured, this time they won't be so lucky," Gu Yanran said, a hint of ruthlessness gleaming in her eyes.
