The entire Jing Wang Manor was eerily quiet.
Unable to contain herself, Pei Zhiqing leaned in and kissed Gu Qingning's rosy cheek. "My medical skills are limited, and I can't guarantee that I can cure the poison in your body just yet. However, I can help you stand up so you won't have to rely on a wheelchair anymore."
Gu Qingning blushed and tried to shift the topic to something else. His body wasn't suited for sudden movements; he had fainted today because he had been too excited yesterday, acting recklessly.
"I know; you don't need to worry too much. The poison in me was inflicted by someone in the palace. Even if you manage to cure it, he will find another way to keep me in a wheelchair." Pei Zhiqing frowned, his tone carrying an indescribable pain.
"How could I allow someone else to sleep beside me?" Gu Qingning felt a pang of heartache for him.
It was the cruelest betrayal for a father to poison his own son; such brutality had manifested in Pei Zhiqing's life. The royal father-son relationship had never been about affection but rather about the struggle for power.
Gu Qingning couldn't imagine how much suffering he had endured to reach this point.
"I never intended to sit on that throne, nor did I ever want to compete with them. If he wants me confined to a wheelchair for life, then I will comply with his wishes. But they cannot touch my bottom line." A flash of determination crossed Pei Zhiqing's eyes.
From a young age, he had been seen as the weak son favored by Emperor Jing, but that was merely a facade to maintain control over the throne.
With the Duke of the State gone and his mother lost, he was left all alone, and he would not spare anyone who dared to cross him.
Even Gu Qingning—if it weren't for his request, Emperor Jing wouldn't have considered bestowing marriage upon them at all.
"Once I arrange everything, we can find an excuse to leave the capital together and treat the poison in your body. We may not fight for power, but we cannot remain idle either," Gu Qingning said with concern.
With everyone targeting them as a couple, it was impossible not to retaliate.
"In a few days, we should receive news from Fengqing regarding Yaowang Valley. Then we can think of our next steps," Gu Qingning added thoughtfully.
She paused before asking, "Initially, I mentioned arranging for Wan Ning after our marriage. Now it seems you can't stay in the capital; we need to consider other options for her."
When they first made their plans together, Gu Qingning hadn't anticipated such complications.
"What will happen to Gu Wan Ning? We must think of another way," she mused.
"How about we send her to Jianghuai? Do you think that would work?"
Pei Zhiqing thought of someone and expressed her opinion.
"It's not impossible," she said. "But since my mother passed away, I haven't visited her even once, and I don't know how she is doing now."
Gu Qingning spoke with a hint of sadness in her voice.
"No, I'll arrange everything when the time comes," Pei Zhiqing reassured her, noticing the sorrow in Gu Qingning's expression. "She doesn't even know that we are getting married. We can go visit her together then."
After a moment of contemplation, Gu Qingning whispered, "Everyone says she married a sickly man and won't live long, destined to be a widow."
Before she was certain she could heal Pei Zhiqing, she hadn't let Gu Changqing inform her maternal grandmother's family. However, the Shi family had business dealings all over the world; it was possible that news had already reached her grandmother's ears.
When the time came, she would go with Pei Zhiqing to apologize to her grandmother.
"Yes, we'll go together."
