Hong Ling heard the report from outside and stepped out of the inner room, closing the door behind her.
She stood at the entrance, bowing slightly to Gu Yanran in the courtyard, and said, "Second Miss, our Miss wakes up early and has already gone to bed."
Gu Yanran smiled gently and replied, "There have been many matters lately. As I passed by here, I thought it had been a while since I visited Wan Ning. Since she has already rested, I won’t disturb her. I will come again next time to see Wan Ning."
Hong Ling was momentarily taken aback by Gu Yanran's amiable demeanor. When did the people from the second branch become so easy to talk to? Had they changed their ways?
Gu Yanran turned with her maids and stepped out of Xuezhuyuan, glancing back at the courtyard without pausing as she continued on her way.
Yin Sha, who had appeared suddenly, startled Hong Ling. She shot a glare at Yin Sha as she said, "That Gu Yanran doesn’t seem like a good person."
With a worried expression, Hong Ling replied, "With the Marquis and the eldest young master away, and the eldest daughter married into the Jing Wangfu, only our Miss is left in the house. If it weren’t for Young Master Yuxuan’s passing, who knows what trouble the second branch would stir up."
Yin Sha pondered for a moment and remarked, "Now that that mother and son have entered the house, life will not be easy for the second branch. However, we must remain vigilant; there are no good people in this household."
Since being assigned to Xuezhuyuan by Gu Qingning, Yin Sha had spent her days either watching over Gu Wan Ning or lounging on trees and bamboo out of boredom. Seeing her so listless, Gu Wan Ning had pushed her toward Gu Qingning.
To everyone’s surprise, Yin Sha stubbornly refused to leave Xuezhuyuan. Gu Qingning could only let her be.
As time passed, Gu Wan Ning and Hong Ling began to playfully tease Yin Sha from time to time, gossiping about the household like Hong Ling did.
"I don’t think that mother and son from the second branch are easy to deal with. If you encounter them in the house, remember to steer clear and avoid causing trouble for our Miss," Hong Ling warned with a pout.
She recalled an incident when she was carrying osmanthus cake through the garden; Gu Zan had insisted she leave it for him.
Feeling a surge of anger at how they always wanted what their Miss cherished, Hong Ling resolutely refused to give it up.
Gu Zan felt wronged upon hearing this; he began to cry loudly while pointing at the osmanthus cake and declared defiantly, "I am a young master of the Zhongyuan Marquisate! I can eat whatever I want! I will tell Grandmother that you won’t let me have this cake so she can sell you off!"
Hong Ling was infuriated and initially planned to ignore him completely.
To her surprise, this child stood in her way with an expression that said he wouldn’t move unless he got what he wanted.
Considering that their Miss preferred peace and disliked troublemaking, Hong Ling ultimately compromised under Gu Zan's pitiful demeanor.
She was angry with the people from the second household, not with the servants who served her in the manor. Everyone was a servant; why should one servant make things difficult for another?
With gritted teeth, she left the osmanthus cake behind and went back to the kitchen to get another portion. "If no one bothers me, I won't bother anyone," this was Silver Sand's bottom line. She clenched her fist tightly.
"How about you visit the Jing Wang Manor tomorrow and invite the eldest young lady to come see Miss if she has time? The Marquis and the eldest young master have both left the manor, and Miss is all alone in this large house without anyone to talk to," suggested Hong Ling after some thought.
This seemed like the best solution. If the eldest young lady came, Miss would surely be happy and wouldn’t feel so gloomy anymore.
"Oh," Silver Sand replied, then added, "And bring an extra box of lotus root boxes tomorrow."
Without waiting for Hong Ling to respond, she swiftly darted into the bamboo grove.
Frustrated, Hong Ling stamped her foot and muttered under her breath, "Glutton."
Then, she opened the door and peeked in at Gu Wan Ning. She adjusted the corners of the blanket for her, blew out a few candles that were burning brightly, and quietly closed the door as she left.
