A blind person dared to treat her precious grandson in such a manner. Today, she would make sure everyone in the residence understood who truly held authority in the Duke of Loyalty's household.
Gu Wan Ning trembled slightly and spoke up to persuade her, "Grandmother, it was all my fault. If you must punish someone, then punish me instead. Hong Ling was only looking out for me; she didn't mean any harm."
"That won't do. A servant is a servant, and a master is a master," the old lady declared sternly. "Someone take her away and give her thirty lashes."
With a strong spirit and an upright posture, the old matriarch's voice was filled with authority.
Two young servants stepped forward, pulling Hong Ling aside and forcing her to bend over.
Hong Ling's eyes turned red as she looked up and said, "Miss, I accept my punishment."
If she didn’t accept it, the old lady would not let the matter rest.
"As long as the Miss is willing, I will accept my punishment."
The old matriarch pondered for a moment and deemed the punishment too lenient. Instead, she decided to heed her grandson's suggestion and sell Hong Ling off.
She spoke again with severity, "As a servant, how dare you treat a young master of this household in such a way? It seems you do not hold Gu Wan Ning in high regard on ordinary days either. Such disrespectful and disloyal behavior cannot be tolerated in the Duke's residence. After the lashes, sell her off."
After all, she was just a lowly maid; selling her wouldn’t matter as long as her precious grandson was happy.
"Grandmother, if Gu Zan wants to enter Xue Zhu Courtyard, I will let him in," Gu Wan Ning said softly. "Besides, Hong Ling has already accepted thirty lashes; that should be enough."
She understood that Gu Zan was the apple of the old lady's eye but hadn’t expected such blatant favoritism.
"Grandmother, I like this courtyard. Please make the blind person move out." Gu Zan said proudly as he looked at Gu Wan Ning.
His mother had told him that Xue Zhu Courtyard was the best courtyard, with a large bamboo forest and flowing streams—perfect for children to play in.
He had taken one look and instantly fallen in love with it. He was just about to go in to play hide-and-seek when Hong Ling had blocked his way.
"Grandmother always indulges my precious grandson," the old lady said happily as she looked at Gu Zan with a warm smile.
Watching as the young servants held Hong Ling down on the bench, Gu Zan raised his head proudly like a victorious rooster, laughing heartily.
Seeing her grandson so happy made the old lady feel content inside.
"You glutton! Where are you? If you don’t come back soon, Miss will be bullied to death! I’ll die too! Our home will be taken away!" Hong Ling thought desperately while biting down on her teeth to hold back tears.
Usually, Yin Sha would come and go without a trace; Hong Ling never paid much attention to it.
But at this moment, she prayed for heaven to send her glutton back quickly so she could prepare plenty of food for her.
One lash after another fell upon Hong Ling’s back, and her sobs reached Gu Wan Ning’s ears. She clenched the handkerchief tightly in her hands, feeling like a lone boat caught in a storm—desperate and helpless.
Grandmother, as Gu Wan Ning was about to speak, a series of loud thuds suddenly echoed through the air.
Silver Sand descended like a celestial goddess, sending the two young boys flying several feet away with a kick each. The onlookers gaped in shock, their eyes fixed on the unfamiliar woman in the courtyard.
"Who are you? How dare you cause trouble at the residence of Duke Zhongyuan!" Lady Gu exclaimed, her face darkening with anger.
An elderly maid leaned in and whispered something in her ear, and Lady Gu finally regained her composure.
It seemed that this wild girl was brought into the household by Gu Qing Ning, looking just as unruly as her.
"What’s this? Does the old lady want to test how well I can handle myself?" Silver Sand said, moving a chair over and taking Gu Wan Ning from Xiang Ling's hands, assisting her to sit down leisurely.
Lady Gu was so furious that she nearly toppled backward.
Where had Gu Qing Ning found such a brazen girl? Not only did she kick someone right there, but she also left Lady Gu gasping for breath.
