Madam Gu could not swallow her anger and shouted, "You insolent maid, this is the residence of the Duke of Loyalty, not the Prince Jing's palace. You have no right to act so recklessly. All of you, seize her! If you don't, I will have you all dealt with and sold off!"
The guards' faces changed dramatically as they took a half-step back, glancing at Madam Gu. This old woman was utterly unreasonable. They served the Duke and the young lady; their fate was not for her to decide. If it weren't for the Duke's reputation, they would have dealt with this shameless old hag long ago.
The captain of the guard tightened his grip on his weapon, took a deep breath, then slowly relaxed as he stepped behind Gu Wan Ning. The remaining guards followed his lead and stood behind Gu Wan Ning and Yin Sha.
Madam Gu's face was a mass of wrinkles, twisted into a terrifying expression. The air was thick with tension, causing everyone to hold their breath and stare at the ground, afraid to raise their eyes lest they bring trouble upon themselves.
"Wah! You’re all bullying me! I’ll tell Father! When he comes back, you’ll all be in for it!" Gu Zan cried out, seeing that he had not received any punishment for his actions and feeling upset. He threw a tantrum and began to wail loudly.
Yin Sha shot him a cold glance while the captain of the guard twitched at the corner of his mouth. This child thought his father was some great figure just because he wanted to go home and complain. How ridiculous!
The sound of wailing reached Madam Gu's ears, causing the veins on her forehead to bulge as if she might crush her silver teeth in frustration. As the matriarch of the Duke's household, she could not even control a lowly maid or a few insignificant guards. What would others think if they heard about this? Where would she put her face?
Amidst the noisy cries, she glared at Gu Wan Ning. Unfortunately for her, Gu Wan Ning was blind and could not see Madam Gu's ugly expression.
"Wan Ning, you show disrespect to your elder and treat your brother unkindly. Is this how Gu Changqing taught you?" Madam Gu shifted her anger from Yin Sha, whom she could not intimidate, onto the usually meek Gu Wan Ning.
Gu Wan Ning was easy to manipulate; even the carefree Li Ruofeng had managed to take advantage of her in the past. Let alone that as an elder of the Duke's household, Madam Gu had always been treated with respect by Wan Ning.
"Grandmother, you struck Hong Ling; I accept that. But Yin Sha is not my maid; I cannot drive her away. Moreover, she is here at my brother's behest to ensure my safety; I have no reason to punish her," Gu Wan Ning finally understood in her heart that her sister had placed Yin Sha in her courtyard as a precaution against both the house and Madam Gu.
If she still did not realize this by now after living silently in the residence for so many years, she would not deserve to be there at all. Her nature was quiet and reserved, but that did not mean others could bully her at will.
With their father and brothers away at the borders and her sister in Prince Jing's palace, she could not rely on them to protect her constantly; she needed to stand up for herself.
Madam Gu's nails dug into her palms, her vision blurred as blood surged upward, causing her a splitting headache.
"Stop crying!" Madam Gu glared at her grandson Gu Zan, who was sobbing uncontrollably, and shouted angrily.
Though Gu Zan was her precious grandson, he had been led astray by that little vixen Chen Die. It was disgraceful for a young man to weep like a girl, lacking any dignity, making her lose face in front of the servants.
