The autumn air was crisp and the weather gradually turned drier, causing the fallen leaves in the Snow Bamboo Courtyard to be swept up more frequently than usual.
"Miss, something terrible has happened!" Xiangling rushed in, her voice raised in alarm.
Since Hongling had been punished and was resting, Xiangling had been temporarily assigned to serve Gu Waning closely.
Gu Waning set down the book she was reading and asked calmly, "What is it?"
After catching her breath, Xiangling stammered, "I heard from people outside that the Princess Consort Jing and her husband have fallen into a bottomless abyss and are presumed dead. A couple of nights ago, the Emperor sent people to search at the bottom of the cliff, but there has been no news since. Miss, what should we do?"
"Could it be a mistake?" Gu Waning paused for a moment before asking Xiangling.
Xiangling shook her head and continued, "I thought I might have misheard, so I asked others and confirmed it was true. When I returned to the manor and passed by the Ling Garden, everyone inside was whispering about it. I confronted them, but they avoided me. Frustrated, I found my fellow townsman Xiaozhu and learned that it was indeed true. I heard that they were on their way to Foguang Temple to report to the spirits of Lady Chenfei and the Madam when they were attacked by assassins and fell into the abyss. Everyone in the manor knows about this, except us in the Snow Bamboo Courtyard. Miss, what should we do?"
Gu Waning's expression changed instantly; she knocked over the inkstone on the table in her agitation and stood up, feeling her way across the table as she walked toward the door.
Xiangling hurried to support her as they rushed outside.
Standing at the threshold with her face turned toward the bamboo forest, Gu Waning shouted loudly, "Yinsha! Yinsha!"
As her voice grew louder, so did her anxiety. She began to tremble, unable to steady herself on her feet. She leaned against the doorframe, waiting for Yinsha to appear.
In the past, Yinsha would have appeared before Gu Waning without needing to be called. Now, after calling for a long time, there was still no sign of her.
Panic began to set in.
Gu Waning pushed Xiangling aside and urged her to go call for Yinsha in the bamboo forest.
Xiangling hesitated; she didn’t want to leave Gu Waning alone in the house but knew she had to find Yinsha.
"Miss, you should go back inside and rest. If it comes to worst, I'll go check at Prince Jing's residence; it might just be a rumor," Xiangling suggested.
She knew this was unlikely. If Gu Waning had not gone out that day when Hongling was punished, news would have reached Prince Jing's residence by now, and she would have come quickly to defend Gu Waning’s honor.
Now two days had passed without any sign of Gu Waning or Yinsha; Xiangling worried that something might have truly happened to them.
Without further thought, she hurried toward the bamboo forest while urging Gu Waning to stay put in the house until she returned.
Gu Waning pushed Xiangling firmly again, insisting that she hurry off to find Yinsha without worrying about her.
Xiangling stood frozen for a moment before leaning against the doorframe and sitting down at its edge while waiting for her return.
A quarter of an hour later, Xiangling returned with news for Gu Waning. "I called out in the bamboo forest but didn’t see any sign of Yinsha."
Gu Waning instructed Xiangling not to search for Yinsha any longer but to head straight to Prince Jing's residence and see if there was any news from them.
Xiangling left the courtyard, her feet barely touching the ground as she rushed toward the Jing Wangfu. Gu Waning sat dazed on the threshold, facing the main gate of the courtyard, waiting in a daze.
