In the Snow Bamboo Courtyard, flames shot into the sky, flickering and dancing, while wisps of smoke rose lazily. This scene startled everyone in the loyal Duke's residence who had already fallen into a deep slumber.
A young servant rushed to the door, knocking incessantly and stammering that the Snow Bamboo Courtyard was on fire. Gu Siyuan jolted awake, startled, and hastily pulled himself away from Chen Die.
This abrupt motion displeased Chen Die. She raised her eyebrows and pouted slightly, her face full of complaints. "The fire at the Snow Bamboo Courtyard is a matter for the main house; why should you be so anxious?"
After all, the fire was a concern for the main branch of the family, not for them in the second branch.
Gu Siyuan had been busy with official duties for days on end, spending all his time in the study. They hadn't shared such intimate moments in a long while.
That night, Chen Die had been planning to put in some effort to relieve the pent-up desires that had been building within her for days. She never expected those clueless servants to choose such an inappropriate time to create chaos, threatening to ruin her mood entirely.
"Don't be ridiculous; we must see what's happening with the fire at the Snow Bamboo Courtyard. If something goes wrong, it could become a problem for us," Gu Siyuan said as he firmly pinched her slender waist. "You stay here; I'll go take a look. There will be plenty of time later."
"Be quick and come back soon; I'll be waiting for you here," Chen Die replied shyly, lowering her head to hide her smile.
The Snow Bamboo Courtyard was where Gu Wanning resided. If anything were to happen to her, Gu Changqing would surely cause an uproar, making it difficult for Gu Siyuan to handle. It was better to check on things.
As Gu Siyuan hurried away, he did not notice the smug expression that appeared on Chen Die's face behind him. He hurriedly donned his clothes while rushing toward the Snow Bamboo Courtyard.
"How could there be a sudden fire?" Gu Siyuan asked in confusion.
"The weather has been dry and windy lately; there are dried leaves everywhere in the courtyard. It’s likely that a candle flame accidentally ignited them," speculated a young servant following closely behind him with a lantern, panting heavily.
When Gu Siyuan arrived at the Snow Bamboo Courtyard, he was met with blinding flames that shot up like fireworks.
The air was thick with suffocating smoke, and chaos reigned at the scene. People were running back and forth in disarray, carrying buckets of water one after another in an attempt to extinguish the blaze.
Gu Siyuan grabbed a passing young servant and urgently asked, "Where is Miss San?"
"Uncle Ming just moved Miss San to Qiushui Courtyard," came the reply.
As soon as he heard this, Gu Siyuan finally breathed a sigh of relief. If anything happened to Gu Wanning in the loyal Duke's residence, he would also bear some responsibility.
Before long, a figure suddenly collapsed before Gu Siyuan with a thud.
"Master! Master! The lady is missing!" Granny Kuai exclaimed anxiously as she knelt before him, her voice trembling with fear.
She had searched high and low throughout the residence but hadn’t seen even a trace of the lady and didn’t know what to do next.
"The lady is missing? Then go find her! What are you doing here?" Gu Siyuan's heart sank again as he snapped at her sharply.
If Kuai Ruofeng were dead, then so be it; he couldn’t care less.
