Gu Qingning and Pei Zhiqing had not sent any news, and Gu Wanqing's heart shifted from initial hope to deep concern, growing increasingly anxious. Aside from daily reminding Yingsha to inquire about news at the Jing Wangfu, she was at a loss for what else she could do to bring her sister and brother-in-law back.
"Hongling, take out the plum blossom glass hairpin from the bottom of that makeup box," she instructed.
Hongling hesitated, then turned to fetch the hairpin for Gu Wanqing.
With the eldest young lady and her uncle missing, seeing her in such a haggard state pained Hongling deeply.
After finding the plum blossom glass hairpin, she asked, "Miss, may I help you put it in?"
"No, just give it to me," Gu Wanqing replied as she took the hairpin from Hongling's hands, gripping it tightly.
In the days that followed, whenever Gu Wanqing felt lost in thought, she liked to keep the plum blossom glass hairpin close to her. Her dark eyes seemed to be lost in contemplation, and she grew increasingly silent.
The next day
Listening to the sounds of Hongling and Xiangling playing in the courtyard, Gu Wanqing lay quietly on the long couch, bathed in warm sunlight filtering through the dappled leaves above.
A young boy hurriedly entered Qiushui Courtyard and bowed. "Third Miss, someone from the Huai River has arrived."
"Is it my uncle?" Gu Wanqing sat up and asked.
"It's me."
Suddenly, a man dressed in a sky-blue flowing cloud brocade robe appeared in Qiushui Courtyard.
Hearing a familiar voice coming from the front, Gu Wanqing quickly stood up and reached out.
"Cousin!"
She exclaimed in surprise, her eyes slightly red. After drifting at sea for so long, she finally found her anchor and began to feel a sense of calm wash over her.
Seeing Shi Zimo, Hongling's eyes glistened with tears. She quickly turned around to prepare tea and then stepped outside with Xiangling to wait by the door.
"The young master has arrived; Miss finally smiled." As long as Miss was happy, Hongling felt happy too.
For many days, she and Xiangling had tried every means to lift Miss's spirits, but it was as if Miss had withered like fallen leaves, unable to muster any energy.
"Cousin, why are you here?" Gu Wanqing feigned ignorance as she asked.
"On my way to the capital, I heard all kinds of news. You need not worry; Qingning is blessed and will surely escape this calamity. What concerns me more is you. Uncle and I have gone to the border; only you remain in the manor. Grandfather is worried about you and sent me to bring you back to Huai River."
Shi Zimo gazed into Gu Wanqing's eyes with concern.
In truth, he had not received any letter from his grandfather; bringing Wanqing back to Huai River was a decision he had just made.
On the day of Gu Qingning's wedding, he happened to be traveling abroad and received the news too late to return in time. He had long been searching for a reason to visit the capital, and after contemplating for several days upon hearing about Gu Qingning's marriage, he finally decided to set off for the capital.
The journey was fraught with various encounters, and his slow progress meant that he only arrived in the capital today. When the person he had been longing for appeared before him, Shi Zimo felt as if his heart had leaped out of his chest, emotions that had been suppressed for years suddenly resurfacing.
After two years apart, Gu Wanqing still resembled the beautiful and serene figure he remembered from years ago. After a moment of contemplation, Gu Wanqing immediately rejected Shi Zimo's proposal, shaking her head. "My sister and brother-in-law are missing; I cannot abandon the vast Duke's residence, nor can I disregard their safety by fleeing alone to the Huai River."
"If I leave the Zhongyuan Duke's residence, my sister will surely worry if she returns and cannot find me. Besides, staying here allows me to receive news promptly; if I go to the Huai River, messages will be delayed. I absolutely cannot wait idly there at this time."
"Qingning, I cannot leave you alone in the residence; it makes me uneasy."
Shi Zimo's eyes were filled with concern. He had come to the capital with a single purpose: to take Gu Wanqing back to the Huai River before making further plans.
