When alone with Gu Wan Ning, Shi Zi Mo never called her "cousin," but simply referred to her as Wan Ning.
Gu Wan Ning's heart skipped a beat; although she was blind, her heart was not. Two years ago, when Shi Zi Mo first arrived in the capital, he had subtly mentioned to Gu Chang Qing that he had feelings for her. Gu Wan Ning had overheard this while passing by Gu Chang Qing's study and warned Hong Ling to keep this matter to herself, pretending she had never heard those words.
The reason Gu Chang Qing rejected Shi Zi Mo stemmed from Shi Min. Although the Shi family was known for their business acumen, Shi Min was an exception. She had a passion for medicine from a young age and showed no interest in commerce. During her lifetime, she had advised everyone against marrying close relatives, warning of endless troubles that could arise.
Disregarding his aunt's advice, Shi Zi Mo directly expressed his feelings for Gu Wan Ning to Gu Chang Qing. Firmly believing in his wife's words, Gu Chang Qing naturally would not allow such a thing to happen and outright rejected Shi Zi Mo.
Since that incident, Shi Zi Mo had not set foot in the capital again. After reaching the Huai River, he bid farewell to his travels across the land.
"Cousin, as long as I stay in the residence, I can receive news from my sister and brother-in-law in a timely manner. Besides, I have Hong Ling and Yin Sha with me to attend to my needs, so you need not worry about me," Gu Wan Ning said calmly.
Gu Wan Ning felt grateful that Gu Qing Ning had left the skilled Yin Sha by her side; otherwise, she wouldn't know how to cope.
Since Shi Zi Mo had come to the capital, he couldn't leave Gu Wan Ning alone at the Zhongyuan Marquis's residence; it was simply impossible for him.
After a moment of contemplation, Shi Zi Mo reluctantly spoke up: "I still need to stay in the capital for a while longer. We can talk more when you've made up your mind."
Having traveled through rivers and mountains for two years, he had tried hard to forget Gu Wan Ning and attempted to make room in his heart for someone else, but it proved futile. After repeated failures, he no longer tortured himself with fantasies of a day when he was not her cousin and she was not his cousin—how wonderful that would be!
Today, he suppressed his long-held feelings and stepped back into the capital not only for Gu Qing Ning and Pei Zhi Jing but also for Gu Wan Ning.
"Cousin, I heard you’ve been traveling these past two years. You must have seen many places and experienced many interesting things. Why don’t you share some stories with me?" Gu Wan Ning tried to change the subject, fearing that Shi Zi Mo might say something outrageous.
What would she do then?
Shi Zi Mo chided himself for being too eager and scaring Gu Wan Ning; thus, he replied: "Alright, let me tell you."
His deep and affectionate gaze remained fixed on Gu Wan Ning since stepping into Qiu Shui Garden.
She thought that if she couldn't see, she wouldn't notice; however, Shizi Mo forgot that a person with a visual impairment, while unable to see, often has heightened senses of smell and touch compared to others.
Gu Wan Ning had already sensed Shizi Mo's brazen gaze upon her, even without overhearing his earlier words.
As Shizi Mo spoke, he noticed that Gu Wan Ning, who had initially seemed distracted, was now lying on the noblewoman's couch, fast asleep. He gestured to Hong Ling to bring a blanket to cover her, so she wouldn't catch a chill.
Hong Ling tiptoed to the door and said to Shizi Mo outside with concern, "Cousin, it's good that you are here. The young lady has been worried about the eldest lady and the elder uncle. She was also frightened by the fire at Xue Zhu Courtyard, and now the madam has perished in that blaze. The young lady has hardly slept well for several days because of the fright."
"The young lady is too pitiful!"
How could one person bear so much shock at once? The young lady had already reached her breaking point; she just didn't dare show it in front of others for fear of causing more trouble.
Moreover, Hong Ling couldn't bear to see her mistress suffer like this any longer. She reached out and secretly took out the plum blossom glass hairpin that Gu Wan Ning had hidden beneath her soft pillow.
