In the Autumn Water Courtyard, Xiangling returned from the Jing Wang Manor and approached Gu Waning, saying, "Miss, there is still no news from the eldest young lady."
Seeing Gu Waning's worried expression, Xiangling hesitated, wanting to say more but holding back. Earlier today, she had overheard some servants in the manor discussing that several of the Wind Blade leaders had gone to the border. If the prince had not yet been found, why were the guards from the Wang Manor heading to the border?
Xiangling felt puzzled. "Miss, there seems to be something strange about the servants at Jing Wang Manor."
"What do you mean strange?" Gu Waning asked.
"I heard someone from Jing Wang Manor mention that the Wind Blade leader was heading to the border. Isn't the Wind Blade leader a close guard of the prince? Why aren't they looking for the missing prince and princess but instead going to the border? It's odd!" Xiangling voiced her thoughts.
Gu Waning furrowed her brow, finding it indeed strange; logically, it shouldn’t be that way.
"Yinsha, are you there?" Gu Waning thought of Yinsha and decided to ask her for clarification.
Yinsha appeared before Gu Waning and said, "Miss, what do you need?"
"Has anyone from Jing Wang Manor contacted you privately?" Gu Waning inquired. Yinsha had once been an undercover guard in Jing Wang Manor and should have some connections there.
"It’s been a long time since anyone has contacted me," Yinsha replied thoughtfully. Since the incident with the prince and princess, she had been busy attending to Gu Waning and hadn’t received any news from the manor for quite some time.
"Is that so?" Gu Waning sat down, hoping for news about her sister but finding herself disappointed once again.
Xiangling glanced at Gu Waning apologetically. She had thought there would be news on this side; she truly hadn’t meant to cause distress. If they didn’t speak about it, it would only fester in their hearts. At least voicing it could offer a glimmer of hope; having no news at all was a terrifying prospect.
Yinsha and Xiangling exchanged a glance before stepping down. Today, the court was abuzz with heated discussions about whether Gu Wanqing could secure the royal favor. Emperor Jing's face darkened as he watched the officials below, each one arguing with the other, causing his temples to throb and his head to spin.
Pei Zhirui stood by nonchalantly, suppressing a smirk as he observed everyone, feeling quite pleased with himself.
Suddenly, a eunuch rushed into the hall, leaning close to Eunuch Zhou to whisper a few words, startling him so much that he trembled slightly. The eunuch then approached Emperor Jing's side and said, "The Princess Consort of Jing has returned."
Emperor Jing straightened up, his eyes brightening as he addressed the officials in the hall, "Everyone, please quiet down. We will conclude today's discussions here. You may kneel and take your leave."
The officials exchanged glances, each one feeling disgruntled. However, under the Emperor's urging gaze, they complied without further protest and respectfully knelt before exiting the hall.
Pei Zhirui cast a glance at Eunuch Zhou, pondering for a moment before following everyone out of the hall.
As the last of them departed, Emperor Jing hurriedly grasped Eunuch Zhou's hand and said, "Quickly, to the Jing Prince's residence."
"Your Majesty, the Princess Consort has returned to the residence of Duke Zhongyuan," Eunuch Zhou interjected.
"Then let us head to Duke Zhongyuan's residence," Emperor Jing replied, a flicker of guilt crossing his eyes. If Gu Wanqing found out that he had used her sister to manipulate Pei Zhirui, would she blame him? If only he had not agreed to Concubine An's request regarding her son, perhaps Prime Minister Song would not have fallen out with her.
Eunuch Zhou ordered a carriage to be prepared as they exited the palace gates and made their way toward Duke Zhongyuan's residence.
Pei Zhirui watched Emperor Jing leave the palace and felt an unsettling premonition rising within him. What could possibly be so urgent that it compelled both the Emperor and Eunuch Zhou to hastily depart from court?
