Gu Qingning and Gu Wanning were enjoying their dinner when a hurried voice interrupted them.
"Your Highness, Second Miss, His Majesty has arrived."
As soon as the words were spoken, the group, who had been happily eating, reluctantly put down their chopsticks. Only Old Chen continued to eat, praising Bai Zhi's culinary skills, completely oblivious to the servant's announcement.
Emperor Jing strode into the Zhongyuan Marquis' residence, disregarding Gu Siyuan and the others following behind him, and made his way directly to Qiushui Garden. Upon seeing Gu Qingning's table set for dinner, he paid no mind to the distinction between sovereign and subject and took a seat among them.
Hong Ling quickly added a pair of chopsticks and a bowl for him, silently waiting.
Gu Siyuan cautiously glanced at Emperor Jing, who waved his hand, signaling them to leave.
"Is Jing'er really at the frontier?" Emperor Jing asked in disbelief. After all these years of enduring illness, who would have thought he would rush to the border right after resolving the poison?
"Did Your Majesty not already know?" Gu Qingning replied coolly. Ever since she learned that Pei Zhijing's poison had been instigated by Emperor Jing himself, she had harbored considerable resentment.
Late affection is worth less than grass!
As a daughter-in-law, she couldn't voice her feelings directly and had to keep them bottled up inside. Even before returning to the capital, she had heard that he had plotted against both the Zhongyuan Marquis' residence and Gu Wanning. This only deepened her displeasure toward him.
Yet she maintained her composure and respectfully replied, "Yes."
Emperor Jing was aware of Gu Qingning's displeasure regarding his scheme against Gu Wanning but pretended not to notice her dissatisfaction.
Old Chen didn’t even spare a glance at Emperor Jing as he savored his pear blossom wine with delight.
Emperor Jing turned his attention to Old Chen without reproach. Upon learning that Pei Zhijing was at the frontier, he speculated that the poison must have been resolved before focusing on Old Chen.
Gu Qingning introduced him, "This is my master, Old Chen."
Emperor Jing's lips twitched in surprise as he asked, "The Old Chen from Yaowang Valley?"
He never imagined that the disappearance of the Jing Wang and his wife would lead to an encounter with Elder Chen from the Medicine King Valley. Gu Qingning nodded in response.
Beside her, Gu Wanning was not as composed. She hadn’t expected her sister to actually seek out the Medicine King Valley and successfully take Elder Chen as her master. No wonder upon her return, she had insisted on treating Elder Chen with utmost respect.
“Good, good, good,” the Emperor said three times in succession before he cleared his throat twice to regain his composure. Despite being the emperor, he had his own constraints and could only endure.
The Emperor glanced at Gu Wanning, then at Gu Qingning, hesitating to speak about Wanning's situation.
Gu Qingning interrupted him, “Wanning will not marry Pei Zhirui.” There was no way she would push her sister into a pit of fire; it was absolutely impossible.
The Emperor murmured, “I never intended for this matter to come to fruition.”
“Your Majesty can scheme against me, but you cannot scheme against my sister. She is blind and has already suffered enough ridicule from others. Placing her in such a precarious position will only embolden those who mock her.” Gu Qingning spoke without concern for the Emperor’s face, leaving him speechless.
Gu Wanning slowly set down her chopsticks, her eyes slightly red. She felt she had caused trouble for everyone.
“Sister, I’m fine. I’ve managed all these years; it’s just an engagement, and we haven’t married yet. There’s still room to rectify things.”
Gu Wanning understood that Gu Qingning meant well for her but also thought that as the ruler of a nation, the Emperor should be given some respect; it wouldn’t do to push too hard.
“Hmph.” Gu Qingning let out a soft snort. If she hadn’t rushed back in time, Gu Wanning would have suffered even greater grievances.
