Gu Wan Ning was puzzled as to why Gu Qing Ning would ask such a question, thinking she was just joking. Gu Qing Ning felt that her own conflict had hurt Gu Wan Ning; how could she possibly ask such a foolish question? Gu Wan Ning was her sister, always would be.
But how could she make her accept the fact that she wasn’t a child of the Gu family? Wan Ning would always be her good little sister.
Gu Qing Ning reached out and embraced Gu Wan Ning, reminiscent of their childhood when they relied on each other in the manor, lying together on the bed, warming each other, and reminiscing about their late mother.
Gu Qing Ning thought that it wouldn’t be possible for Gu Wan Ning to accept such a truth all at once. It would be better to wait until her eye condition was treated before revealing the truth.
Gu Wan Ning didn’t know what Gu Qing Ning was thinking; she only felt that the question had come out of nowhere. Being sensitive since childhood, she couldn’t help but wonder if she really wasn’t a child of the Gu family. But if she wasn’t a child of the Gu family, whose child could she possibly be?
Why had no one ever told her in over ten years that she wasn’t Gu Chang Qing’s daughter? Not even a hint had been dropped.
From her understanding of Gu Qing Ning’s character, if she hadn’t had solid evidence, she wouldn’t have asked her such a question. Yet no matter how much she thought about it, she couldn’t find any flaws.
Gu Qing Ning knew that Gu Wan Ning was sensitive and would surely try to find answers upon realizing something was off with what she said. Thus, when her true identity was eventually revealed, it wouldn’t come as such a shock; the acceptance would be easier.
However, she believed this was the best moment to share some information with her, giving her time to adjust. Once her eye condition was treated, she could truly make the choices she wanted.
She thought of Shi Zi Mo, that sun-like young man who had liked Gu Wan Ning since childhood. Just because their mother left behind a warning that cousins should never marry due to their blood ties, he had ultimately kept his feelings for Gu Wan Ning hidden away in his heart.
She could see that Gu Wan Ning had feelings for Shi Zi Mo as well, but both were held back by their mother’s warning and dared not take a step further.
She thought it was time to send Shi Zi Mo a letter inviting him to the capital.
After a while without any response from Gu Wan Ning, who looked at her suspiciously and asked, “Sister, are you serious?”
Hearing her voice, Gu Qing Ning raised her eyes to look at Gu Wan Ning. “I was thinking about how cousin didn’t get to attend my wedding back then. He hasn’t been to the capital for quite some time either. If he knew about your eye condition, he would surely be very happy. Why not write him a letter and invite him here?”
As soon as she finished speaking, Gu Wan Ning’s face turned slightly red as she softly replied, “I’ve already met cousin.”
"Is Cousin here in the capital?"
Gu Qingning hadn't expected that Shi Zimo had already arrived in the capital. It seemed he must have learned about her departure and rushed over to protect Gu Wanning.
"Yes, he came to see you and your brother-in-law. However, as soon as he entered the city, he heard about your fall from the cliff and your disappearance. When the Emperor bestowed a marriage upon me, he grew worried that more misfortunes might befall the Gu family, so he decided to stay in the capital for a while."
Gu Wanning explained to Shi Zimo, her hand unconsciously reaching beneath the soft pillow.
She remembered placing that glass hairpin under the pillow, yet she had searched several times without finding it. Feeling shy to ask Hongling or Xiangling, she sensed something was amiss but decided to let it go.
Still, she couldn't help but occasionally stretch her hand beneath the soft pillow to search again.
Gu Qingning's lips curled into a slight smile as she quietly chuckled to herself; it seemed Cousin Shi's timing for coming was just too coincidental.
