Chimu Jiu couldn't remember when she had fallen asleep. After the heavy rain, sunlight quietly filtered through the gaps in the window, spilling into the living room. Her soaked clothes had dried without her noticing, but the sofa beneath her still felt damp, carrying the lingering scent of rain.
Instinctively, she raised her hand to shield her eyes from the intrusive light, hoping to catch a few more moments of sleep. It was only when her hand brushed against her forehead that she realized it felt a bit hot. Almost immediately, a wave of dizziness washed over her, as if the entire world were spinning around.
Chimu Jiu gritted her teeth, enduring the discomfort as she forced herself to sit up. Her legs felt unsteady, each step akin to walking on cotton.
Struggling to reach the window, she pulled the curtains shut, instantly plunging the living room into darkness. Then, with some effort, she stripped off her dirty clothes and grabbed a blanket from the sofa, wrapping herself tightly in it.
This time, she deliberately avoided the damp spot and curled up in another corner of the sofa, sinking back into a deep sleep.
She had no idea how long she slept when she was jolted awake by the sound of the doorbell ringing insistently. Lazily shifting her body, she peeked out like a small creature startled from hibernation.
The living room was dim and shadowy; the thick darkness seemed to swallow everything whole.
With great effort, Chimu Jiu fished her phone out from between the cushions. The screen's bright light pierced through the darkness, revealing that it was already evening. She had slept through an entire day; time seemed to have stood still while she was lost in slumber.
The doorbell continued to ring, urgent and persistent, accompanied by loud knocks that echoed in the silent space, causing her eardrums to throb.
Frowning, Chimu Jiu wondered who would come looking for her at this hour. Who even knew where she lived? Could it be that white lotus Chiqi Yun had followed her here?
What an unrelenting spirit.
She muttered under her breath, irritation lacing her voice. After sleeping all day, her dizziness hadn’t lessened; instead, her stomach began to ache in waves of sharp pain.
Annoyed, Chimu Jiu climbed off the sofa and tightened her grip on the blanket as if it were her last refuge.
Stumbling toward the entrance with a dazed gait, each step felt heavy.
Through the electronic peephole, she saw a figure that was not who she expected but rather a tall and imposing man.
It was Du Hengyan.
Chimu Jiu stood frozen in disbelief at what she saw.
Was she really losing her mind? Was she hallucinating?
Yet, she instinctively opened the door.
Outside, the man stopped ringing the doorbell as soon as he heard the lock click open.
The door swung open, and their eyes met.
Du Hengyan frowned slightly at the sight of her small figure wrapped in a blanket, resembling a fragile little cat. A flicker of tenderness crossed his eyes.
Chi Mu Jiu stared wide-eyed at the towering man standing at 1.93 meters tall, momentarily speechless.
You?! Why are you here?!
Her voice carried surprise and a hint of barely concealed joy.
Why wouldn't it be me?
Du Hengyan's tone was cold and commanding, his gaze deep and intense, as if he wanted to draw Chi Mu Jiu into himself completely.
Did this woman not want him? A trace of doubt and dissatisfaction stirred within him.
I heard you were forced into an engagement?
His words were direct and sharp, lacking any hint of subtlety.
Oh, so you flew all the way here to watch me make a fool of myself?
Though Chi Mu Jiu didn’t know how Du Hengyan found out about this, she refused to back down. She stubbornly lifted her chin, trying to mask her inner vulnerability with a tough attitude.
I came back specifically to see you!
No sooner had she spoken than the man swiftly stepped inside, decisively pinning her against the wall of the entryway, his powerful presence leaving Chi Mu Jiu with no escape.
Du Hengyan?!
Chi Mu Jiu gasped, her heart racing as if it might leap out of her chest.
Baby, I missed you so much.
Du Hengyan's voice was low and hoarse, filled with desire and longing. Before Chi Mu Jiu could react, he kissed her soft lips passionately, demanding fervently.
His kiss was still as fervent and intense, as if he were trying to consume her very soul.
