The faint scent of tobacco mixed with a potent aura of masculine hormones enveloped her completely. It made her feel as if she were trapped in an inescapable whirlpool. His muscles were taut, his chest broad, and each breath he took radiated a powerful energy. Du Hengyan held her waist tightly, and Chi Mujiao felt as if she were being melded into his very being.
"Just a little more," Du Hengyan's voice was laced with temptation, his breath warm against her face, causing her cheeks to flush instantly.
As she struggled, the blanket wrapped around her slipped away. Fortunately, the living room was dark, concealing her embarrassment. His warm hand brushed against her smooth skin before pausing.
"Why aren't you wearing anything?" His hoarse voice carried a hint of surprise and concern.
"My clothes got dirty," Chi Mujiao replied, her voice barely above a whisper, tinged with grievance.
Du Hengyan swiftly lifted her in his arms and draped the blanket back over her. It was only upon this contact that he noticed her body felt unusually warm.
"Are you running a fever?" There was a note of reproach in his tone, but his eyes were filled with worry.
"Thank goodness you’re here," Chi Mujiao buried her head against his chest, a wave of sorrow washing over her. Memories of the grievances and pressures she had endured over the past few days flooded back, and an ache welled up inside her.
The strength she had been holding onto crumbled completely in that moment; before this man, she could finally let down all her defenses. Du Hengyan felt the dampness on his shirt and froze for a moment: the little one in his arms was crying.
His heart tightened instantly, an unfamiliar pain coursing through every nerve like a fine electric current, making him shudder involuntarily.
"Don't cry, it's okay. Whatever it is, I'll help you solve it."
Upon hearing this, Chi Mu Jiu lifted her head, her tear-filled eyes looking up at him with a red rim around them. This time, she didn’t stubbornly reject him as she had in the past. Although he was just a male model, the fact that he could say such words brought her a sense of comfort.
In that moment, all the external identities and labels seemed to fade away; what mattered was the warmth and support he offered her right then.
"Duh Heng Yan, my stomach hurts, and my head aches. Am I dying soon?" At that moment, she felt helpless and terrified like a child lost in the dark.
"Yes, you're dying—you're making me heartbroken!"
Seeing her mood seem to improve a little, he let out a slight sigh of relief and sat down on the sofa while holding her. But as soon as he sat down, he felt that the sofa was damp as well.
With the dim light from outside, he could see her clothes discarded on the floor. No wonder she had a fever; it turned out she had been caught in the rain. His brows furrowed tighter, and his feelings of pity deepened.
"Stay here; I'll turn on the lights," Du Heng Yan said softly.
"No, hold me with you," Chi Mu Jiu pouted without hiding her desire for affection.
"Okay."
As the switch clicked on, bright light instantly filled the living room. Du Heng Yan thoughtfully shielded her from the sudden brightness, worried that it might discomfort her.
With the living room illuminated, he glanced around at the furnishings and decor of the house and was quite surprised. It seemed this little one had some money after all.
"I'm going to check if there's anything to eat in the kitchen."
Du Heng Yan effortlessly cradled Chi Mu Jiu in one arm, as if she were just a small doll.
"Wait—"
Before Chi Mu Jiu could stop him, Du Heng Yan had already opened the refrigerator door.
