The refrigerator was crammed with a chaotic assortment of snacks, instant noodles, and some carbonated drinks, yet there were no fresh ingredients to be found. There wasn't even a single raw egg. For Du Hengyan, who adhered strictly to a dietary regimen and muscle-building meal plan, this scene felt more unbearable than the sky falling down.
His brows were tightly knitted, and his expression was so dark it seemed like it could drip water.
"Is this what you eat when you're living alone?"
Du Hengyan's voice carried clear dissatisfaction and skepticism as he fixed his gaze on Chi Mu Jiu, his eyes seeming to pierce right through her.
Chi Mu Jiu could distinctly feel the displeasure radiating from him, making her heart flutter with unease.
"It’s not me—"
She attempted to explain, but her voice came out lacking conviction.
Du Hengyan silently chanted in his mind, reminding himself not to get angry.
"Don’t get angry, don’t get angry; if you get sick, no one will take care of you."
Meanwhile, Chi Mu Jiu whispered softly beside him, her tone delicate and somewhat appeasing.
"Forget it; I won’t hold it against you since you're unwell."
With a resigned sigh, Du Hengyan gently placed the little one he had been holding onto the kitchen counter.
He reached out and without hesitation began removing the snacks from the refrigerator, tossing them mercilessly into a garbage bag.
Chi Mu Jiu dared not speak up as she sat on the counter, watching helplessly as this irritable man disposed of her beloved snacks one by one. Her eyes were filled with reluctance and grievance, yet she didn’t dare to voice her objections, only able to look on pitifully.
Afterward, Du Hengyan took out his phone and made a call. While Chi Mu Jiu couldn’t hear the voice on the other end, she caught snippets of his conversation.
“Send over some groceries according to my meal plan.”
Du Hengyan said this while raising an eyebrow at Chi Mu Jiu, who immediately turned her head away to feign indifference. However, her slightly flushed ears betrayed her true feelings.
“And some fever-reducing medicine.”
After finishing his call, Du Hengyan turned back and carefully picked her up again to return to the living room, his movements gentle and cautious.
Seeing her silent, Du Hengyan felt a twinge of displeasure.
"What’s wrong? Are you sulking because I took your snacks?" His deep voice carried a hint of dissatisfaction.
"It’s not that I’m upset, I’m just... sad," Chi Mu Jiu replied, her eyes darting as she tried to appease him. Her voice was soft and sweet, laced with a touch of caution.
She couldn’t quite understand why she felt like a different person in front of Du Hengyan. The stubbornness and defiance she usually exhibited had vanished, leaving only obedience and meekness in their place.
"It’s easier said than done. If I find out you’re eating those junk foods again, you’ll be in for it!" As he spoke, Du Hengyan gently pinched her waist. A wave of tingling sensation coursed through Chi Mu Jiu’s body, causing her to shiver involuntarily.
"I wouldn’t mind letting you indulge a little," Du Hengyan leaned closer, his words laced with both flirtation and a hint of threat.
"I know, I understand," Chi Mu Jiu replied, feeling a flush creep onto her cheeks as she shifted slightly, avoiding his intense gaze.
Before long, the doorbell rang again.
"Stay there and don’t move; I’ll get the door," Du Hengyan said knowingly, aware of who was knocking this time, as he instructed the little figure on the sofa.
Chi Mu Jiu hadn’t planned to move anyway, but hearing his words made her nod obediently. She leaned back against the sofa, though her curious eyes couldn’t help but glance toward the door.
It was probably the delivery guy with the food.
Chi Mu Jiu peeked her head out as she watched Du Hengyan bring in a large pile of ingredients into the kitchen. Moments later, he returned with a bowl of savory porridge and placed it in front of her.
The porridge was still steaming hot, releasing an enticing aroma.
"Drink some porridge first; there’s also fever medicine," he said.
Chi Mu Jiu didn’t refuse; being cared for felt truly wonderful. She accepted the bowl and took small sips, savoring the warmth as it slid down her throat.
Du Heng felt relieved only after seeing her take the medicine and then start drinking the porridge, before finally heading towards the kitchen.
