This was the first time he had seen her cry, and the last time her tears had filled him with heartache. This time, however, that feeling of pain was even more intense.
It seemed as if he could hear the sound of her heart breaking; each tear felt like a drop striking the very tip of his heart. Du Hengyan's own heart shattered along with hers.
"Take me away, okay?"
Amidst her choked sobs, Du Hengyan heard her muffled voice. That voice carried endless pleading and hope, as if it were squeezed out from the depths of her soul.
"What?"
Du Hengyan thought he must have misheard. His heart raced, unable to believe his ears. The little person in his arms wiped away a tear, but the tears continued to flow like beads from a broken string, refusing to stop no matter how much she tried.
She looked at him with tear-filled eyes, her gaze a mix of determination and dependence.
"Take me away, okay? Wherever you go, I will follow."
She repeated herself, her voice still tinged with sobs but unwaveringly resolute.
Du Hengyan gazed at the delicate face of this little woman in his arms, streaked with tears, and felt as though his heart was being tightly gripped by an unseen hand.
"Okay."
He didn't hesitate; he agreed immediately. He longed to take her away, to have her by his side every single day. Just one day without seeing her felt unbearable.
"Once you finish dealing with things at home, I'll take you away. You can only stay by my side for the rest of your life."
"Don't cry; it breaks my heart too. Be good."
His tone was incredibly gentle, capable of melting anyone's heart.
"Then kiss me."
Zhi Mu Jiu said playfully, her voice carrying a hint of childlike desire for comfort.
He indulgently placed a kiss on her forehead and then gently wiped away the tears from the corners of her eyes.
"I'm hungry."
She melted against Du Hengyan's chest, soft and tender, a mix of exhaustion and playful pouting.
I was cooking, but then Du Hengyan pointed at the jars and bottles of condiments that had been tossed onto the coffee table.
It seemed like we needed to restock on these seasonings. The glass container had shattered, but thankfully the plastic bag was sealed, so the soy sauce and other seasonings hadn’t spilled all over the living room.
“Let’s go out together to buy some condiments,” he suggested.
Chi Mu Jiu sniffed, organizing her thoughts as she rose from Du Hengyan's embrace. “Can I really go out this time?”
Du Hengyan raised an eyebrow playfully. “Of course you can! You can always go out from now on. Just carry me and help me change my shoes.”
“Alright.”
With one hand, Du Hengyan lifted her up and walked steadily toward the shoe cabinet.
Being held like this felt oddly reminiscent of carrying a child. She lightly hooked her fingers around his neck, a hint of dissatisfaction in her expression.
“You're the child here! Besides, I just like carrying you like this—taking you out for a stroll.” Du Hengyan teased her deliberately.
“Du Hengyan, you’re full of mischief!”
Chi Mu Jiu pouted and playfully punched his shoulder, but her strength was lacking since she was in his arms.
“Same to you,” he replied with a smile, completely unfazed by her little tantrum.
Someone turned her head away in silence, pretending to be angry. But the slight upward curve at the corners of her mouth betrayed her true feelings.
In that moment, warmth and sweetness enveloped the house, as if all their earlier arguments and dangers had vanished without a trace, leaving only the warmth of their mutual reliance and playful banter.
