The voice of Chi Mu Jiu carried a hint of panic, her heart racing like a startled deer, unsure of how to respond to such an unexpected statement.
"Being stubborn is not encouraged," Du Heng Yan said with a disdainful smile, shaking his head.
She wanted to argue further, but the phone beside her suddenly vibrated.
Caller ID: Ye Jue.
Last time at the banquet, Chi Mu Jiu had exchanged contact information with Ye Jue.
Du Heng Yan followed her gaze and naturally saw the note on the screen. Ye Jue? He furrowed his brows, his thin lips pressed into a line. This name had been popping up frequently lately; it seemed he was hearing about him everywhere.
"Hello, Mr. Ye." Chi Mu Jiu answered the call, her tone polite and courteous.
"Miss Chi, hello. I apologize for the disturbance."
On the other end, Ye Jue's voice remained warm and refined, like a gentle spring breeze.
"Not at all, Mr. Ye. You’re too kind." Chi Mu Jiu responded with a smile.
"Miss Chi, this weekend the Ye family and the Li family are hosting an auction. I wonder if you have time to attend?"
Ye Jue spoke leisurely.
In the living room, only Chi Mu Jiu and Du Heng Yan were present. The phone wasn’t on speaker, but with Du Heng Yan’s keen hearing, he could catch most of the conversation clearly.
An auction? Is he really just calling to ask if she’s going? When did their relationship become so close? Why was he completely unaware of this?
Du Heng Yan feigned indifference, casually fiddling with a chess piece in his hand, though inside he felt a pang of jealousy rising.
"Thank you for the invitation, Mr. Ye," Chi Mu Jiu said while stealing a glance at Du Heng Yan across from her. Seeing his nonchalant demeanor, she didn’t dwell on it too much.
"I look forward to seeing you there, Miss Chi. I’ve had someone prepare the invitation; however, I still need you to provide an accurate location."
Ye Jue's arrangements were so considerate that they were hard to refuse.
Late in the evening, Chi Mu Jiu readily agreed and told Ye Jue the address. Just as she was about to speak, the man sitting across from her received a phone call. Du Hengyan glanced at the caller ID with a hint of unease in his eyes before standing up and walking away to answer the call.
"What’s going on?"
The caller was Ye Qi. Meanwhile, Chi Mu Jiu felt a wave of unease wash over her. This was too coincidental. Moreover, why was he taking the call away from her? Could it be that his former employer was calling him, which was why he had to step away?
A series of questions flashed through her mind.
"Hello? Miss Chi? Are you there?"
Ye Jue's voice came through the phone, pulling Chi Mu Jiu back from her chaotic thoughts.
"Miss Chi?"
Seeing that there was no response for a long time, Ye Jue gently inquired again.
"Oh? I’m sorry, my cat at home was being naughty," Chi Mu Jiu quickly regained her composure and provided the address.
Then she heard Ye Jue chuckle softly. "Miss Chi is really thoughtful. I also quite like cats. May I ask what kind of cat you have? Perhaps we could spend some time together with them?"
"Spend time with cats??" Upon hearing this, Chi Mu Jiu instinctively glanced at Du Hengyan in the hallway who was still on the phone, feeling a bit uncomfortable.
"Mr. Ye, my cat is quite timid and has a bad temper; I’m afraid it might scare you."
Chi Mu Jiu politely declined, picturing Du Hengyan’s aloof demeanor, which indeed resembled an elusive cat.
"I see. No worries then. It seems Miss Chi is not only beautiful but also has a cat with quite a personality," Ye Jue replied, still maintaining his warm tone.
"Then I won’t disturb you any longer. Goodbye."
Goodbye, Ye Xian.
A cat? What kind of cat is this?
