Inside the car, the atmosphere felt heavy. The unturned phone screen displayed the flight itinerary reminder, glaringly bright.
At two-thirty, the earliest flight was scheduled. A pang of anxiety gripped Chimu Jiu's heart, causing her pain. She fixed her gaze on the phone screen and tried to keep her voice steady.
"Are you going back to a certain country?"
Du Hengyan noticed the state of his phone as well and nodded slightly. "I have some matters to attend to back home; a friend is in trouble."
Chimu Jiu sniffed and let out a long breath, her heart filled with bitterness. She felt increasingly selfish, knowing he had urgent matters to handle yet not wanting him to leave.
"You just said you would tell me if something came up; is this what you meant?" she asked softly. "Will you come back? If you don’t return, where will I find you?"
She poured out her worries in one breath. The atmosphere in the car grew even more bitter.
Du Hengyan reached out and gently touched her little nose, teasing her. "Are you afraid I won’t come back?"
Chimu Jiu's eyes reddened slightly. "Yes, I’m afraid. Not that I’m scared you won’t return, but that I won’t be able to find you."
Her mood had just begun to shift when this sudden prospect of separation disrupted her thoughts.
"Give me your phone."
Chimu Jiu obediently handed over her phone. Du Hengyan skillfully began to type away.
In the quiet of the evening, Chi Mu Jiu glanced at the two green dots on her phone's location tracker, now so close together, and felt her mood lighten a bit.
"You can choose to come back with me, but I know you won’t," Du Heng Yan said as he handed the phone back to her. His deep-set eyes were calm, like a still pond, as if he could see right through her.
Chi Mu Jiu opened her mouth but found herself unable to speak. When did this man become so attuned to her thoughts?
She had just finalized an agreement with her father, and the next steps would involve signing contracts and transferring shares—an entire series of matters to attend to. At this critical moment, if she returned to a certain country with Du Heng Yan, it would undoubtedly delay many things.
Moreover, she had just seen Chi Qi Yun enter the Chi family home; it was likely that Ji Yu Yan had tipped her off. Chi Qi Yun must have known that she had sought out their father.
With these thoughts swirling in her mind, Chi Mu Jiu felt even more conflicted.
"Once everything settles on my end, you’ll come back, right?" Her hopeful gaze was met with his understanding.
"Yes. If anything comes up, just call me. I just transferred a hundred million into your account; consider it your living expenses while I'm away," Du Heng Yan said in a flat tone.
"A hundred million?!" Chi Mu Jiu blurted out in disbelief.
She quickly checked her messages and confirmed the incoming transfer of a hundred million.
This man had just given away a hundred million and now he was sending another hundred million. Chi Mu Jiu was left speechless, overwhelmed by shock.
"Are you the top model at that agency? Is it really that lucrative abroad?" she asked half-jokingly.
Du Hengyan smiled faintly but still did not answer her question.
"Take me to the airport; you can keep the car."
His gaze held a tenderness that was hard to ignore.
"Of course, I’ll take you. So the car is yours; it’s not a rental."
It dawned on Chi Mu Jiu that all this time, she had been accompanied by an invisible wealthy person.
A rich man who made his fortune as a male model? The thought struck her as odd.
However, at that moment, Chi Mu Jiu had no time to delve into such matters. She understood that Du Hengyan had his own affairs to attend to, and she had her own responsibilities and missions.
"I can see you’re reluctant to part with me," he said in a low voice, reaching out to smooth the slight furrow in her brow.
His long fingers gently brushed against her skin, filled with endless compassion.
"Don’t worry, I’ll be back soon—at most, within a week."
