The car door slowly opened, a faint sound echoing in the silent space, as if the bell of fate had tolled, announcing that an unknown encounter was about to unfold.
Several tall bodyguards stepped out of the vehicle, their postures upright and every movement exuding a sense of trained precision. Their imposing presence was like a solid wall.
Among them, two foreign bodyguards stood out even more, their sharp gazes emanating a strong sense of pressure.
Chi Mu Jiu furrowed her brows slightly, a wave of unease rising within her. This scene felt too unfamiliar, and the appearance of these individuals instilled in her a sense of inexplicable danger.
Instinctively, she wanted to turn and retreat back into the safety of the passageway, away from this uncertain situation. At least there, she could find some familiar comfort.
At that moment, a stranger's voice came from inside the car: "Miss Chi."
Chi Mu Jiu paused, her expression growing serious. She glanced toward the vehicle, its tinted windows blocking any view of the interior, like a mysterious black box concealing its secrets.
The two foreign bodyguards quickly moved to block her path.
Her unease intensified, but faced with these men, she felt helpless. Then the man in the car spoke again: "Miss, may I have a word?"
Chi Mu Jiu looked at the solidly built bodyguards standing in front of her; there was no way to retreat now. She took a deep breath to steady herself and then stepped forward slowly into the car.
Inside the luxurious and spacious business vehicle, it felt like an independent world cut off from the outside. The decor exuded opulence, every detail revealing the owner's extraordinary taste.
A well-dressed man sat quietly on a leather seat, his attire simple yet elegant.
As the door closed behind her, it completely separated Chi Mu Jiu from the outside world. At that moment, it was just her and this mysterious man sitting across from her.
He held an unlit cigar between his fingers. His features were strikingly handsome, as if sculpted by an artist's careful hand. His high nose bridge and piercing blue eyes sparkled like jewels—deep and imbued with a Western tranquility.
A faint scent lingered in the air inside the car, unique and elusive.
Chimu Jiu gently inhaled, yet she could not quite pinpoint the specific scent. It was a fragrance that combined the sweetness of roses with a hint of bitterness. The Sacred Water had a base note of bitter tea, evoking a woody incense that was almost painfully sharp.
The man seemed to sense her confusion; he raised an eyebrow and slowly began to explain. Chimu Jiu was slightly taken aback by how fluently he spoke Chinese. However, compared to what he referred to as the Sacred Water, she still preferred the scent of dragon sandalwood that lingered on Du Hengyan.
"Miss Chimu, would you like to smoke?" The man offered her a cigar, his eyes glinting with anticipation.
Chimu Jiu shook her head in refusal, but as she did so, her gaze inadvertently fell upon the tattoo peeking from the man's wrist. The design depicted a nine-tailed fox, so lifelike it seemed ready to leap off his skin at any moment. This nine-tailed fox complemented the man's aura perfectly—both mysterious and captivating.
Chimu Jiu felt an unsettling intuition stirring within her; the more she observed him, the more she sensed that this man was not here with good intentions. Did foreigners also believe in Chinese mythology?
"Miss Chimu, my Chinese name is Pei Si. It's a pleasure to meet you. If I have offended you in any way, I hope you will forgive me," he said, his tone polite and humble.
"Mr. Pei, I didn't expect your Chinese to be so fluent. We have never met before; what do you mean by that?"
